Recently while searching for some photos of Picasso and his Dachshund, Lump, I discovered the blog Habitually Chic written by a “stylish young woman living in New York City and working for a top interior designer.” Well, I got a case of blog envy. Or post envy. This stylish young woman had the best collection of Picasso and Lump photos I had seen so far. So with a nod to her and a high recommendation to stop by her lovely blog, I am borrowing them for mine today.

Since I’m taking tomorrow off, I’m wishing you all a happy 4th of July today.
And because dogs and fireworks don’t go together, I’m featuring Sabrina Helas’s beautiful and haunting Dog House photo. I know it doesn’t have the “rah rah” patriotism of a splashy red, white, and blue image, but I am drawn to it in a John-Cougar-Mellencamp-Ain’t-That-America kind of way. And, of course, the neon Dachshund is awesome.
Sabrina is a super talented L.A. pet photographer whom I’ve featured here before. She has recently expanded into maternity photography and children under 6. See her dogs here and her mommies and kids here.
Also, here are some tips to calm dogs’ fears during fireworks.

Yay! Summer officially starts today and I have some amazing action pet portraits to usher in the dog days of 2008. Seth Casteel is a Los Angeles-based pet photographer who specializes in documentary-style photography and capturing the spontaneity of dogs in their own surroundings.
I love his crisp style and his ability to get the elegant lines of dogs in motion as well as their wonderful split-second, utterly focused expressions. Clearly, Seth’s background as a wildlife photographer in the Australian Outback permeates his work today in the jungles of L.A. He also is a passionate advocate for shelter dogs, giving his time to photograph them so they look their best for potential forever companions. Wonderful work Seth, on every level.

Beautiful new find; Mia Clapton's A Dog A Day blog. Clapton is an Aussie transplant working a corporate job in San Diego with a dog photography business waiting in the wings. Judging from her talent, I think she'll make her way back to dogs and cameras some day soon. My favorite are her dogs from India featured here.

Memorial Day is depressing, because war is depressing. And the thought the poor dogs who are sent into combat – so trusting and loyal – just breaks my heart. So, I was going to take the day off. No post. Just a moment of silence.
Then I discovered Smoky, a four-pound Yorkshire Terrier and hero of WW II. And, well, I had to share her story.
Found in the jungles of New Guinea in 1944, and sold to a dog-loving soldier named Bill Wynne, Smoky soon became a member of the 5th Air Force, 26th Photo Recon Squadron. She flew 12 combat air/sea rescue missions and survived numerous typhoons and kamikaze attacks.
Smoky also became a true war hero at Luzon airfield when she pulled a string, attached to vital phone wires, through a 70 foot long , 8 inch diameter pipe. As Bill writes in his memoir Yorkie Doodle Dandy
But her true calling was entertaining the troops perfecting dozens of tricks to cheer up the boys in the hospitals as they tried to heal.
After the war, she returned to the States with Bill and continued her career in the entertainment business, performing live on stage and TV for 10 years.
Smoky died on February 21, 1957 at age 14. But she lives on in the numerous memorials to her throughout the country where she is remembered as one of the greatest and most beloved dog heroes of all time.
