  • Dog Art Today’s New Photo Album: Enter Your Dog + Win a Mug!

    In September 2008, I ran a contest
    asking readers to finish this sentence: "My dog is chicken soup for the
    soul because…" The winner was Linda Belthius whose response included,
    "Because I have been blessed beyond my understanding with having
    [Winnie] to help me through a loss of my dear sister-in-law….She is
    an angel with fur!"

    This made me think of all the Angels with Fur who inspire my
    readers, and how I'd like to meet them.  So, I set up this photo album.  If you
    would like to be included, email me
    a photo of your pet (72 dpi) and a few sentences describing him or her.
    Also let me know if you would like me to link to your website.

    I will have a random drawing of all the dogs and the winner will recieve a large mug from my CafePress store.  Contest ends next Tuesdeay, November 18th at noon.  Good luck!

  • Sharon Montrose’s New Etsy Shop

    Sharon Montrose, the Squeak at Home photographer, I featured last week, just opened an Etsy shop.   Her offerings include 18 animal prints from a series she was going to make into a book, but decided to use instead to become an Etsian and join the community of made-by-handers. This Basset Hound is the only dog in the series that includes a lamb, an owl, a reindeer, a porcupine, a pig, and more. But she has over 100 images coming soon, so stop by her shop and start your collection.  Each print is only $25.  Wouldn’t they be great in a baby’s room?

    (This post is in honor of my friend Jude and her sweet Basset Hound, Byrdie. Jude is always sending me inspiring ideas and hopeful thoughts. I thought I would return the favor with this beautiful Basset Hound image.)

    When LA Sharon Montrose shot a photo spread of her pup Squeak relaxing around their home, she was overwhelmed with the response. Squeak is so cute, the light is so perfect, and the wallpaper…where did she find the wallpaper?! People went nuts for her “Squeak at Home” post.

    So, she wants to do it again. With your dog. If you live in photogenic Los Angeles home, and would like to have one of the premier dog photographers document your pup doing what he does best for free, you need to contact Sharon and try to get on the list.   • Welcome Fall 2008

    Fall officially begins today at 11:44 am EST.  So today, I am featuring some autumnal dog art to usher in a season I spend the summer dreading, then enthusiastically embrace when it arrives.  Stew, fireplaces, football, yes, as a kid, I even liked going back to school, fresh notebooks and finding out whom I would sit next too.  Spring is thought to be the season of rebirth, but in many ways it's Fall.  Every team is perfect, and every student has an A.  Feels nice.

  • Thank You 9/11 Comfort Dogs

    The lesser known of New York’s canine heroes, comfort dogs, such as this golden retriever, help soothe those affected by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Similar to search-and-rescue dogs, comfort dogs travel to disaster scenes to aid relief efforts. Studies show that people experience physiological changes—such as a drop in heart rate and blood pressure—when they pet animals.

    Thank you to all the brave heroes, canine and human, who sacrificed themselves on that tragic day.

  • Prayers for Murry

    Murry is a client of Donna and Lee Anderson.  His parents brought him by their studio last week for an impromptu photo session with Lee because he is scheduled for intricate surgery tomorrow to remove a brain tumor. 

    Please keep sweet Murry in your thoughts and prayers and send him and his parents some positive healing energy.

    It's not to late to see William Wegman: Fay at the Allentown Art Museum in PA.  The show "celebrates the artistic partnership of Wegman and
    his beloved canine muse, Fay Ray. For ten years (1986-1995), their
    lives were creatively entwined, resulting in a brilliant body of photographic
    work for which Wegman and Fay are especially known.
    Their odyssey as partners in art and in life is explored in a rich array
    of photographs, 
    many of which have rarely or never been exhibited publicly."

    Show runs until September 7, 2008.

    Also, the museum is offering a special Dog Days Promotion through the end of August.  Visitors with admission receipts from the Allentown Art Museum receive $2.00 off the exhibition fee for Elliot Erwitt: Dog Dogs at the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, PA.  Very cool.
