  • Ludmila Sienkiewicz: Tyler Foote* Goes Global

    Tyler Foote* by Ludmila Sienkiewicz

A few weeks ago, Dutch artist Ludmila Sienkiewicz purchased an ad here on Dog Art Today.  She said she was looking for dogs to paint and asked for photos of my dog, Tyler Foote.*

I sent her the link to Tyler's Pinterest boad, "Who is Tyler Foote? An exploration of the lost history of Nevada County, California, America's alienation from nature, and my mixed-breed, survivalist
    dog."

This morning, I woke up to his tousled, handsome face in my inbox.

I immediately designed her a new ad and was generous enough to let her approve it before making it live.

You don't have to paint a portrait of Tyler Foote* to advertise on Dog Art Today.  But in these times of editorial/advertorial confluence, I thought I should disclose that it doesn't hurt.

    * Tyler Foote is a road in Nevada County, California built in 1913 by Arthur DeWint Foote who was artist and writer Mary Hallock Foote's
husband. Tyler Foote Road connectes North Columbia, California to a town called
Cherokee that used to be called Tyler.   I'm not sure why the town was called Tyler, but I plan to find out.

  • Clair Hartmann’s Darby in Modern Dog Magazine

    Clair-hartmann-modern-dog-magazine

Nita and Darby by Clair Hartmann

This month, Shannon Church of Modern Dog Magazine profiles North Carolina dog artist Clair Hartmann

One of the paintings the magazine chose to represent Clair's work is the Darby painting she sent me after I wrote about his death
We both consider this painting a breakthrough, artistically for her (she felt the painting painted itself), emotionally for me (it was cathartic to see Darby again in a different light, and it enabled me to say "yes" to my new dog, Tyler).   So we were both pleased — I used the term "freaking out" — when the Modern Dog editors shared Darby with their readers.

I was curious how the profile came about.

Moira McLaughlin: Did you submit your work to Modern Dog Magazine?

    Clair Hartmann:
No, they approached me.  I'm not sure how they found me.   I'm thinking being on Dog Art Today might have had something to do with it.

    MM: Who selected the paintings?

CH: They asked me for specific paintings, and I was thrilled when they chose Darby.

MM: How was the interview conducted?

CH: It was a written Q + A, which I like best because it gives you time to think, and you don't sound like such a boob when it's published…hopefully.

MM: What has been the response to the article compared with other press you've received?

CH: I've gotten a few inquiries and one commission, which surprised me because thought I would get more.  I look at press as a whole.  The more you have written about you, the more known you are.  It's all connected and it leads to other things like shows and other media.  I do believe it started with Dog Art Today's blog post about my Downtown Dog Project.  That's when my work started reaching other people outside of my "zone," which ultimately means more sales and commissions.

MM: Thank you, Clair, for bringing Darby's sweet face back to me in new and surprising ways.  And thank you for your continued support of Dog Art Today.  I think your new ad is fantastic (see right sidebar).

Photographer Katherine Carver has an excellent interview with Anna Dibble.

    Favorite quote:

I really do not like what has happened to the word "creative’."  As with many words, this word has been overused in such a huge variety of mostly bad commercial ways, that it no longer has the true meaning it once had as a word.   I haven’t yet found a word to replace it. The old meaning – to me – meant making things out of nothing, and out of anything.  Making things that come from a person’s imagination, past, present, future – and attempting to not be influenced by other people’s ways of thinking, being, imagining.  It is a hands-on search for self. – Anna Dibble

Illustrator and designer Fumi Koike lives in Saitama, Japan, but to me her work evokes spring in the Sierra foothills of California.  She captures the overlap of seasons: gathering wood, planting starts, snowshoe trips to Donner Summit, tank tops and scarves rotating through our wardrobes, dogs whimpering to play all day, then passing out under the blankets when the sun goes down.  Every day is every season.  The beauty is intoxicating.  Just like Fumi’s work.

A Monday in mid-January calls for some dogs with sunshine and flowers.   Luckily, I recently was made aware of Lambertville, New Jersey artist and gallery owner, Judy Henn, who describes her work as a cross-pollination of Henri Matisse and Milton Avery.   Judy says, “I know a painting works when someone looks at it and smiles.”
I spent several hours smiling at her dog portraits this morning.

See more at Judy Henn’s studio and gallery, Robins Egg Gallery.

Thank you, Dog Art Today reader and dog artist, Janet Burt of Rainbow Pet Portraits, for introducing me to Judy’s work.

  • Dog Art Today’s Holiday Cards: It Takes a Village

    Vintage-dog-christmas-card

Tyler + Darby by John Burnett

I didn't plan on sending cards this year.  I've been creatively blocked since my dog Darby died last December.  But, I live in Nevada County, a place where everyone's an artist and everyone's connected.
Here's how I went not sending cards this season to sending custom-made ones with hand-crafted envelopes distressed, stamped, and lettered to look like they came from the gold fields of California.

    First there's John Burnett

    John-burnett-vintage-photo-2

    John Burnett by John Burnett

John Burnett is a web consultant, graphic designer, artist, and photographer.   I contacted him regarding SEO optimization after he photographed my sister, Sheila Cameron, and redesigned her website, Watching the Paint Dry.  Sheila is another Nevada County artist…

    Sheila-cameron-nevada-city-artist-2

Sheila met John through Erin Thiem…

    Erin-thiem-outside-inn

Erin Thiem at The Outside Inn

Erin owns and runs The Outside Inn, an authentic motor court built in the 1930s, originally called The Airway Mote. Here's a photo which doesn't have to do with the story, but I love this postcard…

    The-outside-inn-nevada-city-vintage-photograph

Vintage postcard of The Airway Motel now The Outside Inn via flickr

Erin not only runs The Outside Inn, a quaint and funky Nevada City treasure with 16 individually-themed rooms, she also writes the best blog in Nevada County about what to do and see. It's called InnSide Nevada City.  It's beautiful and informative, and she has lots of contests, which is how Sheila met John, by winning his design services.

So I met with John and he helped me with my web traffic.  Later, he told me he wanted to make dog portraits using vintage photographs.  He sent me this…

    Tyler-foote-vintage-photograph

    Tyler Foote by John Burnett

I told John that if he made me a card with my two dogs, Tyler, my current dog who is a macho survivor, and Darby, my first dog who had the sensitive heart of a poet, I would send it out as my holiday cards.  He met my challenge with these guys…

    Albany_cabinet_cards

Then, I decided I wanted the cards to look like they came from 19th century California.  After 1.) making this Pinterest board and 2.) panicking (is this how brides feel?), I called Erin at The Outside Inn.  Because Erin is also a passionate card maker.   She told me that if I brought lunch and could guarantee "each envelope would be individual" she would help me.

I drove over to The Outside Inn bearing turkey sandwiches and a gift basket with a bottle of Montoliva wine (from a vineayard a few miles away), brie, and homemade pomagranate jelly (I made with my neighbors in November with fruit from their tree).   Erin and I sat in the front office, greeted guests, and made these…

    Handmade-vintage-envalopes-2

I had the cards printed locally at The Real Graphic Source where Kim and Ceihra helped me through the process.  And I faked the calligraphy and they turned out like this…

    Vintage-dog-christmas-card-2

Tyler & Darby 2012 Holiday Cards for Dog Art Today by John Burnett, Erin Thiem, The Real Graphic Source and Moira McLaughlin

It might sound absurd to hand make envelopes or care about stamps that will get thrown away.  But this year, through your readership, advertising, and donations, I saw how significant the individual gesture is.

Making these cards with Nevada County artists brought that lesson home to me, and I wanted to share that.  This has been a year of loss and recovery.  I didn't believe that I would get through it, or that I would find another dog.  But you kept telling I would.  I trusted you.  I am grateful.  And I wanted to let you know.

I would be happy to send you a handcrafted Tyler & Darby card from the gold fields of California if you email me your address.

If you would like a vintage portrait of your dog visit John Burnett's Vintage Dog Portraits Facebook page.

If you're coming to Nevada County call Erin at The Outside Inn. Yes, it is dog friendly.  To see what it's like to live here visit her blog.

  • The Enlightened Hound Canine Wisdom Posters by Debbie Kendall

    Enlightened-Hound-1

    Canine Wisdom Poster No. 1

Printmaker, Debbie Kendall of The Enlightened Hound lives in Buckinghamshire, England and works in her attic studio overlooking the treetops. There, with her muse, a tenderhearted Portuguese Water Dog named Figo, she carves and prints her series of Canine Wisdom posters inspired by 19th century American typography and the secrets dogs have about living happy lives.

I think these prints so charming and cheerful.  And, because they are hand-crafted, signed, and numbered each one has its own identity, it's own enlightened energy.

Debbie's series of canine words of wisdom are also available as greeting cards and would be lovely to send out for the holidays, joyful reminders about what's important when it's easy to lose the scent.
