  • Mickey Rourke: Condolences, Kudos, and The Uncler

We send condolences to Mickey Rourke who this weekend lost his longtime companion, Loki his 17-year-old Chihuahua whom he thanked in his Golden Globe speech for always being there for him.

Also, I spotted an excellent Peta ad on a billboard in West Hollywood yesterday starring Rourke and one of his other dogs, Jaws.  I don't know how it is in your neighborhood but LA is filled with people (dudes especially, sorry but it's true) who refuse to neuter their dogs.  I think this ABC (Animal Birth Control) campaign is brilliant…

And finally, if you need a good laugh about our economy watch this parody of The Wrestler by the guys at Funny or Die.  It's caled The Uncler, as in Uncle Sam, a down on his luck former star desperate to make a comeback.  Enjoy!

Good luck at the Oscars, Mickey.
If you win, maybe it will be a good omen for Uncle Sam too!

  • Sarah Palin’s Christmas Card

    via changoblando’s flickr site

I couldn’t find  an image of a Pit Bull with lipstick.  So instead I am presenting my idea of what Sarah Palin’s Christmas card might be.  Although the dog really is not aggressive enough for her ilk.

Watching her last night was as terrifying as it was ugly.

Words I’ve heard to describe Sarah Palin’s speech: snarky, hideous, grand slam, torpedo, from hell, Tracy Flick, Eve, “Stay classy, San Diego”, heat seeking missile, snide, mocking, derisive, condescending, and cutthroat.

Interesting article in the Huffington Post about two focus groups,  unmarried and married women Hillary Clinton supporters, responding to Sarah Palin’s speech.  Both groups said she executed it very well, but were not impressed with her vitriol.

“In both groups, narrow majorities said they held a more negative view of Palin after her speech.”

Informative links about who Sarah Palin really is:

Mudflats – blogger from Alaska explains everything and anything you wanted to know about AK politics.
Jnail blog – citizen journalist investigating all of Sarah Palin’s scandals, especially Waterbreak Gate.
1080 KUDO – Alaskan progressive (yes there is such a creature) talk readio.  Hear what people who know her really think.  Warning: very addictive.

Christmas card image sent to me by Rebecca Collins (with out the political commentary).

P.S. If you find a Pit Bull with lipsitck image please send it to me.

P.P.S.  I would love to have my own focus group here.  Let me know what you thought of Sarah Palin’s speech in the comments section.

8:38 am update:  My friend Tom says that this card is too cute to come from Sarah Palin.  Here are some more images to consider via flickr.

And I just discovered  the Baltimore Sun’s John Woestendiek’s Mutts blog where he, too, compares all the candidates to dogs.

Now, it’s finally time to add the last piece of the puzzle to my own dog/candidate comparison and decide what Sarah Palin is…

  • Minnie the Magnificent Re-release

In honor of my father’s birthday, I am re-releasing his blockbuster film, Minnie the Magnificent, starring his beloved Papillon Chihuahua mix, Minnie, performing her astonishing array of tricks. Enjoy!

Also, Dad, I’ve made you these Minnie business cards so all your fans will be able to find the Minnie The Magnificent website.
Here is the proof of them.  There won’t be the grey bar in the middle.

    Minnie_moo_cards_post wp_IMG

Let me know how they turn out. I ordered them from what looks like a very cool printing company in England called Moo.

Hope you have a Happy Birthday!

    Love, Moira

  • Happy Birthday, Minnie!

Minnie the Magnificent, my mom and dad’s Papillon Chihuahua mix, turns eight today.  I heard they’re all going out for ice cream to celebrate.  (Yes, Minnie gets her own cup.)  Have fun!

  • Heel Inspires Hillary Fan

Dog Art Today gets political again with this Hillary poster inspired by Disney’s viral marketing campaign poster for Beverly Hills Chihuahua.  The Hillary one was designed by screenwriter/artist Tony Puryear.  He wrote Eraser.   Poster available here.

Read more about this hotly debated poster here.

P.S. You will recall that Eraser starred Arnold Schwarzenegger…a Republican…hmm….?!

  • HEEL: Disney Gets All Dog Art-y

    Heel_chihuahua

Driving through Hollywood today, I spotted a wall covered with this this Heel poster.  Hmm, did Shepard Fairey get a Chihuahua?  Did Kevin McCormick of Obey The Purebreed start a wheat paste campaign?  I couldn't tell at 35 mph, so I drove on.  Later, I saw a huge Chihuahua silhouette painted on the side of a building.  That's not graffiti, I thought, that's corporate.

I came home and Googled "Heel L.A." and discovered this website where a Chihuahua named Papi calls for his comrades to revolt against dog sweaters and being carried in purses.

With a little more research, I found some answers.  According to ViralBlog, Disney started a viral marketing campaign a few days ago for their upcoming movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
The live action film about Chloe, a Beverly Hills Chihuahua who gets
lost in Mexico and needs help from other dogs to get back home, sounds
like Lady and The Tramp meets The Incredible Journey.  And although it
is not due to be released until September 26, its YouTube video is already no. 6 on ViralBlog's top 10 viral videos of the week.

And look, influential dog bloggers like me are talking about it.  Nice job, Disney, especially since the working title was South of the Border, and this was the original poster…

    Beverly_hills_chihuahua_poster

Cool street dog art is way better, unless Shepard Fairey and/or Obey The Purebreed have lawsuits pending.  Then, I'm on their side.

Update: 5.19.09:  There is a hot thread about this Hillary/Heel poster by Tony Puryear over at reddit.

    Highlights include:

Is the Heel/Hillary poster a poorly done rip off of Shepard Fairey's Obama poster?

    Obama_hope_poster_fairey

Can it be a rip off when Shehard Fairey appears to be inspired by these artists?

Or perhaps Fairey found inspiration from Chinese propaganda posters…

    Or the Japanese Naval Ensign…

I'll keep you posted on this intriguing nexus of dog art, pop art, politics, and propaganda.  Comments welcome.

  • Oops! Top Dog Breed List Revised!

    Ashamed_dog_2

OK, now I know how the “Gray Lady” feels when she’s made a mistake…foolish. I spent the last 10 days counting down the most popular dog breeds in the U.S. only to realize this morning that I was working from an outdated list. So, after a momentary lapse in courage when I debated sweeping the whole incident under the virtual rug of the blogosphere, I decided to come clean and make a correction. Truth be told, the list wasn’t jibing with my perception anyway. I knew Yorkie’s were higher than 5th on the list. They’re actually 2nd! Here is the new rankng according to recent AKC dog registration statistics:

    1. Labrador Retrievers
    2. Yorkshire Terriers
    3. German Shepherds
    4. Golden Retrievers
    5. Beagles
    6. Dachshunds
    7. Boxers
    8. Poodles
    9. Shih Tzu
    10. Miniature Schnauzers

    This is my old list:

    1. Labrador Retrievers
    2. Golden Retrievers
    3. German Shepherds
    4. Beagles
    5. Yorkshire Terriers
    6. Dachshunds
    7. Boxers
    8. Poodles
    9. Shih Tzu
    10. Chihuahua

As you can see, the poor Chihuahuas lost their spot to Miniature Schnauzers, who I owe a gift list and an apology. I take full responsibility for this error and deeply regret any harm I have caused to the above mentioned breeds or their owners.

I’ve reorganized the countdown below in the correct order, and I’ve added Miniature Schnauzers to the number 10 spot.

  • Chihuahua Gifts

Chihuahuas are the 11th most populare dog breed in the U.S. I’m including them on my list because last year they were number 10 so they get an honorable mention. Enjoy!

    Carryons

In my opinion, Carry-Ons: Traveling Chihuahuas by Sharon Montrose is one of the best dog books I’ve ever seen. I just love the design, the fonts, the layout, the photos…well, you get the idea. Any Chihuahua owner would be thrilled to recieve this gem of a book for the holidays.
