  • Marjorie Weiss: Black Dogs at Chestertown

    Pa_400_P01_09

    Joe's Black Dog

Mastering silhouettes is the sign of virtuosity.  An artist must confront the challenge of featureless black space and rely solely on composition and color to pull off a successful piece.  Marjorie Weiss's black dog paintings are a perfect example, deceivingly simple yet profoundly executed.  Like other favorite silhouette artists, Kara Walker and Joseph O. Holmes, I am in awe.

After a career as a photorealist painter, in 1997 Weiss created this painting based on an old advertising postcard:

    Black Dog in Chestertown

Artistically something obviously clicked for her and she has gone on to paint dozens of images in her Chestertown dog series.  Look closely and you can appreciate her ability to use acrylics to achieve bold hues and delicate, almost watercolor-like softness.   Many of my artist readers will know achieving watercolor-like softness even with watercolors is a feat.  Weiss's deftness with color and brushstroke is inspired

  • Eleanor Grosch the Sometime Dog Artist

    Pomeranian

    Pomeranian

Eleanor Grosch is one of my favorite artists, but she rarely does dogs.  I found a few on her Pushmepullyou Design website and her blog.  I love her retro-modern graphic style which she compares to Charley Harper, whom she calls a “hero” and “the mentor she never knew she had!”  Surprisingly Elanor initiated her simple animal art before she ever saw Harper’s work.  When she discovered it, she felt she found a kindred spirit.

I see mid-century modern influences from Eastern European graphic designers in her work.  Her animals remind me of the Czechoslovakian and Russian zoo series matchbox labels.  And her birds are in a class by themselves.  My favorite is the loon…no wait, the peacock…no, maybe the crane…And, of course, her dogs are darling too!

  • Dogs Rule Fat Book Auction This Saturday!

    Dogs_rule_book

Mark your calendars to bid on this Dogs Rule Fat Book this Saturday, November 15th.  The project was a collaboration of 13 dog artists (myself included) who each contributed an original work of art.  Fabulous photographer and artist, Jill Beninato, who spearheaded the project, then bound the works together to create this one of a kind dog art book.  All proceeds benefit a Place to Bark Animal Rescue.

The link to the auction will be posted here on Novemeber 15.  Good luck!

Click here to see an excellent video presentation of the book and an interview with Jill Beninato by Rebecca Collins.

And visit Jamie Pfughoeft's website for more beautiful images of each page.

  • Beth Stafford + Cassie: Dog Art Collaborators

    Blue Strokes

The best thing about writing this blog is looking at the world through other artists’ eyes.  This might be my favorite story about finding beauty in everything…

Beth Stafford is an accomplished artist whose award winning abstract paintings are collected and shown throughout the world.  She also is the owner of an energetic Airedale named Cassie.  They live in rural North Carolina where Cassie spends hours with her nose to the window, desperate to get outside and play with the deer, the birds, and the squirrels that taunt her from their yard.

    Cassie-at-work

    Cassie at work

One day Beth looked at Cassie’s nose smudges and saw them not as another round of window washing, but as exuberant statements about life.  She saw Cassie as an artist expressing herself.

Eager to collaborate, Beth took photos of Cassie’s window markings and added her digital painting skills to produce inter-species originals she calls PiCassieOs.

Almost every dog artist I feature has a muse, a pet who inspires them.  Beth has a partner.  A dog who directs her work and focuses her talent and I think the results are simply wonderful.  This is not to detract from Beth’s individual work, but for me the unbridled joy and spontaneity of Cassie combined with her owner’s appreciation and clever manipulation of mundane nose smudges is something truly special.

Beth and Cassie’s paintings are available as prints from Team PiCassiO’s blog, and on t-shirts, mugs, ornaments, and more at their CafePress store.

  • Danger Dog Art Calendar 2009

    Danger_dog_calendar_cover

I am pleased to announce my latest project.   Michelle Page, who has turned her love for Nepalese hand-painted “Beware of Dog” signs into an international pet portrait business, and I have collaborated to create the 2009 Danger Dogs of Nepal Calendar.  She provided the art and I created the design.  We both picked the dogs, which was challenging because she has over 800 photos and each one is as charming as the next.

I was going to just show you some highlight pages, but I ran into the same problem.  I love every dog.  So here are all the months featured in the calendar:

The calendar is available for $19.99 plus shipping at our new Danger Dogs of Nepal store.

Visit Michelle’s website to see more Danger Dogs and commission a portrait of your pet (cats, horses, chickens, etc are welcome.)  Also, visit Michelle’s blog to follow her adventures in Nepal.  She is there right now working with the artists and discovering new ones to add to her network.  It’s fascinating!

P.S.  email me if you would like any of these images added to a t-shirt, mug, or print.  I am happy to put these images on other products for free if you are interested in purchasing them.
