  • Dog Band Gig Posters

    Dogs_at_play

Dogs at Play by Guy Juke

I have never heard of these bands, but I am digging their posters from GigPosters.  Quite inspiring and a treasure trove for many of my visitors who come here looking for dog posters.  Cool ones are hard to find.  Enjoy!

BTW, I discovered GigPosters via my new favorite blog, Fita Cola (Portuguese for "stick to me") where there is always something inspiring, especially the author, Carlos Quitério's, amazing collages.  Available on Etsy.  But alas, no dogs.

  • A Perfect Friend by Matthew Rose

    A Perfect Friend

Artist Matthew Rose writes from Paris that he is offering this artist proof of A Perfect Friend to one lucky collector for 250 Euros ($342.25).  The artist proof is the first try of the limited edition series that sell for $750 each.   It is signed, dated ,and marked with A/P instead of a series' number.   Size 56 x 76 cm  (22' x 30").

Of the thousands of pieces of dog art I feature on my site, A Perfect Friend, might actually be my favorite.  Even as I write this, I can't fully explain why.  I just know that if I do mental bracket elimination in my head, I am pretty sure it would win.  (Note to self, look into online bracket widget for 2009).

If I had to name the elements I respond to in this piece, the list would go something like this: it's black and white, graphic, humorous, dada-esque, somehow poignant,  and minimal.  It combines everything I love: dogs, art history, contemporary art, 20th century art, 17th century art, and collage.  Basically it's a visual summation of what I write about every day.  Perfect!

To order the artist print or a limited edition piece,  contact Matthew Rose.   Also, stop by his blog for links to his work, information about his bilingual Parisian printing business, and more holiday gift ideas.

  • The Flip Mino with Dog Art

    Flip_mino_disc_dog

    Disc Dog from DogPlay

Ta Da!  Day 12 of my 12 days of dog gifts, and I have great suggestion: the Flip Mino with dog art.  If you're not a gadget geek, you may not have heard of this amazing device.  Basically, it's a camcorder that fits in your pocket and allows you to upload your videos directly to the web.  Don't freak out that it sounds too complicated for you.  Several of my friends who are not extraordinarily tech-savvy rave about theirs.

What I love is that you can now personalize the Flip Mino with and image of your dog (email me and I will do it for free) or you can find one with cool dog art or graphics of your breed at CafePress.    And what could be better for a dog lover than a handy little device that lets you video hours of dog antics and share them with the world.  Not cheap at $179.00 (and $229.99 for HD) but not crazy expensive either for all it can do.

For more in depth info read Cnet's review.  Or watch Mike Weland, the technology reporter at Free Press, review his in this YouTube video.

  • Dog Breed Ornaments by Mary Ann Varanelli

    Sheltie

Day 10 of my gift guide was a nice surprise.  I wanted to feature ornaments, but since interesting, artistic, dog-centric ornaments are harder to find than you might think, I was about to give up.   So when Mary Ann Varanelli sent me these photos, I looked no further.  Each ornament is made of hand dyed wool, felted for softness and durability, with glass bead eyes and  eco-friendly fiberfill stuffing.  Super sweet works of Christmas dog art for your tree.

  • Dog Breed Portraits from Ballard Design

    Shih_tzu_print

    Shih Tzu

I usually like to feature individual artists and handmade items here.  But I am intrigued by this line of dog prints from Ballard Design, so I thought I would share.  First, I think they are very charming.  I like the "hand written" descriptions of the breeds and the neutral colored images against the black frame.   I also appreciate the extensive list of breeds they offer, 98 in total.  And, I am impressed that the artistic husband and wife team, Vivienne and Sponge, turned their artwork into a mass market product line, while still incorporating a cottage industry vibe — each print is hand colored.

I know a lot of artists read this blog, and becoming a "corporate" artist may not be for everyone, but it's inspiring to see dog art going mainstream and still looking good.

(Note: the images became a little blurry when enlarged.  Visit Ballard Design to get a clearer picture.  Also be aware that prints are available online only.)

    German Shepherd

Day 5 of my Holiday Gift Guide, and I intended to present an array of dog prints.  But then Michel Keck’s work showed up in my inbox this morning, and I couldn’t get past them.  I’ve featured may pop artists and many collage artists, but she is the first pop collage dog artists I’ve found.  I really like her work and I thought you would too.

Her open edition prints range from $35 -$399 depending on size.  They are available here.

  • Dog Art Calendars

Day 3:  Calendars for dog lovers.  Order one for yourself too.

One of my favorite calendars this year is the one I helped create.  It is a collaboration with Michelle Page and her Nepalese dog sign painters.  They provided the vibrant, humorous, and totally original artwork and I put it together and made it available for $19.99 at CafePress

I am so pleased with the way it came out and that it continues to publicize these artists who were being replaced by computers, giving them new outlets to sell their work to customers around the world.  See my earlier post about it, including images of all the dogs/months here.

    Danger_dog_calendar

The Emancipe+ 2009 Pet Calendar features the original artwork of three artists, Heather Christofero, Tim Kerr, and Pat Falconer.  Emancipe+ is an Austin-based organization dedicated to preventing animal homelessness and putting an end to euthanasia as a means of population control by providing low-cost or free surgical sterilization of dogs and cats.  All proceeds from this lovely calendar go towards Emancepe+’s mission.  (Note: some cat paintings included.)    Click here to order yours.

Linda O’Neill’s 2009 Dog Desk Calendar is super sweet.   With 12 of her wonderful pups it will brighten up any dog lover’s day (and desk).  Avaiable at her Abby Creek Etsy Shop.
