Last year, the ten-year anniversary packaging of 9/11 made me queasy. I couldn’t watch.
This year, Alex Balk’s post on The Awl made me queasy in a new way…
Ugh, every year the same question: “What am I going to get the kids for 9/11?” I mean, how many stuffed animal search and rescue German shepherds can you really give and still expect to be the cool cousin?
Is posting another photo of a search and rescue dog gross? Do we even “see” these photos anymore?
These FEMA search and rescue photographs on Flickr were new to me. So I’m sharing.
I spent several hours online at the Ground Zero Museum Workshop looking at the photographs by Gary Marlon Susman, an actor and playwright who became the official FDNY Ground Zero photographer (not without controversy). I felt queasy again. Sick, actually, like I did on that morning.
But I think that sick feeling is important as we move into the second decade of “never forgetting.” So I hope you don’t mind me posting another photograph of a search and rescue dog. I wish there were more. But that was before everyone had a smart phone. Remember?
