While setting up my new studio, I attempted to channel Vera Newumman.  Darby was a good sport.  Now I have to get to work.  I feel rusty.  But excited to start making art again.  Stay tuned.

  • Living in Peace

I'm having difficulty not reading everything about Saturday's massacre in Tucson.   And it's making me sick. So I am posting some peaceful images today.  Dog, man, and chickens coexisting in harmony.  My friend Trish "Farm Girl" Meyler took these photos last week shortly after one of her hens inexplicably died.  She reported that the other girls were squawking their heads off in great distress.  Even chickens, not considered the most intelligent animals, registered that loss of life means something.  While, once again, a lone white gunman, who doesn't have the same capacity to feel even the most basic regard for life that a chicken has, was allowed to purchase a technologically-tricked-out killing device and open fire.

    We are in serious trouble.

  • Sit! Stay! Learn! One-Day Pet Photography Seminar

Bev Hollis, Teresa Berg, and Barbara Breitsameter

Aspiring pet photographers or established ones looking to sharpen your creative and business skills, here is a great idea: the Sit! Stay! Learn! Pet Photography Seminar at Imaging USA in San Antonio, Texas on January 15, 2011.  The day-long event is taught by three prominent pet photographers, Barbara Breitsameter from Chicago, Teresa Berg from Dallas, and Bev Hollis from northern Virginia.  The workshop is an abbreviated version of the three-day Unleashed seminars that the women have taught for the past several years to rave reviews.  The intensive Sit! Stay! Learn! program will focus on lighting, shooting techniques, sales strategies, and marketing.

I am a big fan of these photographers' work, and think it's a terrific idea to learn from three experts with different styles and strengths.

If you can't make it to the seminar in San Antonio, here is another option: the ladies have created a handy wire-bound flip book called Dog Shots, Tips & Tricks for Pet Photographers.  It features helpful hints, inspiration, and 30 favorite set ups and exposures.  The authors call it "the next best thing to having us in your camera bag."

  • Vietnam Christmas Vigil 1966

The 1966 Defense Department annotation reads:

1st Marine Aircraft Wing (1st MAW).  Photographer: Sergeant (Sgt.) Hathaway.   CHRISTMAS VIGIL–A Marine sentry, Lance Corporal Glenn L. Mitchell of Washington, D. C., and his dog, "Chief," patrol a lonely perimeter near Marine Aircraft Group-36 (MAG-36) in Vietnam and pause before a cross near the group chapel.  The Marine's thoughts reflect the hopes of servicemen around the world the Christmas season, "…peace, on earth, good will to men."

Is it futile to wish for peace each year?   I hope not.
