Enjoy…
Thank you for posting this! It is my personal reminder to go and see it for real as it is on show in my area. http://www.mauritshuis.nl/index.aspx?ChapterID=8967&FilterID=988&ContentID=42265
So beautiful!! I can’t believe the actual painting is so small with all that detail. Thank you for posting this Moira, and thank you superheidi for that link. Wish I lived closer to that museum. ps…love your blog too 😉
beautiful painting. And done in natural light or lamp light from life, of an animal that doesn’t lay quietly in the same position for long. Lovely piece.
God, that’s gorgeous. Happy Thanksgiving to you, dear Moira!
@Jane, thank you! Well, it’s just temporary on show. It’s a private collection of an originally Dutch couple who live in the States.
The good news, the show will travel around in the US, starting in Salem, MA, and some other museums, here’s a link:

Thanks for the wonderful links, Heidi. I had never heard of Gerrit Dou or the van Otterloos. I love stories like this about slow, steady, and ultimately savvy collectors. I adore this painting too. It has such a contemporary lustrous feel. It is very special. Keep in touch if you go see it in person. Would love to hear a review.
My pleasure, Jane. Sometimes, I get a little jaded. Like I’ve seen it all in terms of dog art. And then I see a painting like this from 1650 and it blows my mind.
I love the textures too. And the dog actually feels warm and muscular underneath the fur. It is really remarkable. And I had never heard of this artist. New treasure in my mind. Thanks for commenting, Nancy.
This painting is just amazing…i love all the warm tones!
Thanks for sharing this…
