Little Red Riding Hood Was a Banned Book

In 1989, an illustrated edition of Little Red Riding Hood was banned in two California school districts.  The book shows the heroine taking food and wine to her grandmother.  The school districts cited concerns about the use of alcohol in the story.  Seriously.

I don't know what exact version caused the uproar, but there are so many artistic interpretations of the story, I thought I would round up some of my favorites in honor of our freedom to read fairy tales.  Especially the Grimm kind.

The banned version was illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman. It was a Caldecott Honor book.
