  • Goodbye Big Tommy

    Tribute to Big Tommy by Rebecca Lansdowne-Collins, 2010

    I never met Big Tommy, but I have been a longtime admirer of the artwork he inspired in Rebecca Lansdowne-Collins.  Last night she said goodbye to her Scottie muse, whom she describes as "the most photogenic pup we ever had.  The camera loved his big ears."

    I am so sorry for your loss, Rebecca and Dan.  I hope that each day becomes a little easier, and that soon these photos bring you more joy than heartache.  Big Tommy was a lucky dog to be in a family with the talent to capture his essence so beautifully.  Rest in peace, sweet boy.

  • Sadie the Scottie Wins Best in Show

    Sadie ignores the paparazzi

    Sadie, the spectacular Scottie who entered the competition as the favorite having won over 100 best in show ribbons in her career, took home the top honors at the 134 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.  Looking for a good photo of her, I am once again reminded of the amazing skill of the pet photographers I feature here.  Daylife has a great collection of shots, many of which illustrate how difficult it is to truly capture the essence of dogs on film, especially black ones.  I chose this Reuters photo because I love the cool expression of this athlete who did exactly what she planned to do, dominate.  Congratulations, Sadie and handler Gabriel Rangel.

    Another dog makes an appearance in Maraid's outstanding flickr matchbox label collection.  This Czech beauty reads, "Remember – safety-matches don't belong in children's hands." 

    I thought this was a good fit for Back to School Day in Nevada County today.  I always loved going back to school.  But glad I'm not in class this morning.  I am having a hard time putting two words together.  I am going to try some right-brain stuff and see how that goes.

    Inspired by the iconic men/women bathroom door symbols, Berkeley designer Josh Jakus adorable-izes (yes, I just made up that word) the chalkboard to-do list with little recycled felt Scottie dogs to hold the chalk.  Clever!

  • Dog Breed Portraits from Ballard Design

    I usually like to feature individual artists and handmade items here.  But I am intrigued by this line of dog prints from Ballard Design, so I thought I would share.  First, I think they are very charming.  I like the "hand written" descriptions of the breeds and the neutral colored images against the black frame.   I also appreciate the extensive list of breeds they offer, 98 in total.  And, I am impressed that the artistic husband and wife team, Vivienne and Sponge, turned their artwork into a mass market product line, while still incorporating a cottage industry vibe — each print is hand colored.

    I know a lot of artists read this blog, and becoming a "corporate" artist may not be for everyone, but it's inspiring to see dog art going mainstream and still looking good.

  • KG Studios’s K9 Corner

    Scottie mosaic for Rebecca Collins.

    I went a little Dachshund crazy yesterday.  So today I've selected some breeds of some of my readers from the groovy KG Studios in Oakland.  This band of four artists working out of a basement corner consists of KG and Peter Greenstein, Allan Dodge and Dave Hill, Sr.  They specialize in mosaics, wire work, and Kaleponi Ukuleles.

    I confess I have never worked in any of these media, but I know enough to know that making intricate curves out of squares is a true art.  And I am duly impressed.  Wouldn't you love one of these wonderful works for the bottom of your pool?

    Ten years ago Richard Miklenic’s life changed forever when he adopted a Maltese/Yorkie puppy he named Scottie (above), and he fell madly in love with the spirited little dog.  One stormy night, he and Scottie were trapped with no electricity in a house on Vancouver Island as trees banged on the roof and the wind howled outside.  Richard tried to comfort Scottie, holding him near the wood stove. 

    But Scottie was terrified and ran into the darkened house, first behind a curtain and then into the closet in the master bedroom.  Scottie’s primal nature told him to find a cave, and he did the best he could.  The next morning, Richard decided that if Scottie needed a cave to feel secure he would have one, and Scottie’s Fine Art Caves was born.
