  • Stephen Huneck Sale to Save Dog Mountain

Farming is Hard Work by Stephen Huneck

When Vermont dog artist Stephen Huneck took his life in January of 2010, he was facing financial hardships.  Sadly, his widow, Gwen, is still struggling to keep alive Huneck's legacy: Dog Mountain, Dog Chapel, and the 150 acre dog park open to dog lovers from around the world.

In response to a $35,000 real estate tax bill due, Gwen has launched the biggest sale ever of Stephen Huneck's art.  With the coupon code SAVE you will receive 55% off all original limited edition woodcut prints, including the framing.   Visit the Stephen Huneck Gallery at Dog Mountain website for more information.  There is also a donation option where you can contribute whatever amount you want.

Thank you, Meagan, for letting me know about this fundraiser.

  • Shelter in Place by Nancy Diessner

Nancy Diessner and her images, Jacob Belcher/Daily News and Wicked Local

Nancy Diessner's Shelter in Place show at the Bromfield Gallery in Boston depicts portraits of rescued dogs beside portraits of the women who saved them.  Diessner, who worked at the Save a Dog shelter knows all the dogs and owners personally and learned from her time at the shelter "that the bond that grew between often-abandoned or abused dogs and the people who adopted them was 'direct but not simple.' "

Chris Bergeron of Daily News and Wicked Local has an interview with Diessner, a review of the show, and a detailed explanation of the artist's printmaking process that incorporates digital photography, photopolymer gravure printmaking, and Japanese paper.  Read the full article here.

My favorite quote from Diessner, "What I see in the eyes of dogs and in the connection we have with them can, for me, only be expressed visually."

  • Nicely Priced Prints from Heather LaHaise

    Heather_lahaise_3

I hate that advertising expression, "Now more than ever…"  As in, "Now more than ever you're looking to put food on the table."  Or "Now more than ever, you want to NOT get screwed by your stock broker."  But, now more than ever, purchasing art is not a priority.  That's why I love Heather LaHaise's new, very affordable, original signed prints.  Regular Dog Art Today readers know that Heather is one of my favorite contemporary dog artists.  I first wrote about her urban/southern duality here.  I featured her darling painting of my dog, Darby, here.  And wrote about her new series of rescue dog paintings here

Each signed print in her Dogwood series is $35.  (dog – wood, get it?)  The pieces are mounted on hand-stained umber or black 6" wooden cubes.   Gift wrapping is free.  To order prints email Heather at hlstudio@sc.rr.com

Now more than ever, it's time to do your Christmas shopping early.

  • Blue Dogs Named After Blue Dog

    Blue_dog_silkscreens

Prints of George Rodrigue’s new silkscreens, Are You Lonesome Tonight?, 2009

Speaking of health care, did you know the Blue Dog Democrats were named after George Rodrigue’s iconic Blue Dog?  I didn’t.

    Here’s the story:

The term “Blue Dog” is reputably a reference to paintings of Cajun
artist George Rodrigue, which feature a blue dog. So of those paintings
hung in the offices of two Louisiana representatives who were among the
original founders of the coalition. Members explain that “A blue dog is
our mascot because when dogs are not let into the house, they stay
outside in the cold and turn blue,” meaning that moderate and
conservative Democrats felt left out of the Party which they believe
had shifted to the political left. They also claim that they were
“choked by the Democratic party until they turned blue.”

Read full article by Richard Mays via The Sun-Times.

Also, George Rodrigue is now on a book tour for his new children’s book Are You Blue Dog’s Friend?

And finally, I just discovered his wife Wendy’s terrific new blog, Musings of an Artist’s Wife.  I especially like this post on seeing art as opposed to just looking at it.  Stop by and say hi.

Waiting for the Cajuns to Arrive, 2009

George Rodrigue has just released a new limited edition silkscreened print entitled Waiting for the Cajuns to Arrive.  It is an intriguing blend of his early Cajun-Louisiana landscape paintings and his beloved Blue Dog.  90 signed prints are available on his website.  $1,500 each.  Lovely!

  • Dog Breed Portraits from Ballard Design

    Shih_tzu_print

    Shih Tzu

I usually like to feature individual artists and handmade items here.  But I am intrigued by this line of dog prints from Ballard Design, so I thought I would share.  First, I think they are very charming.  I like the "hand written" descriptions of the breeds and the neutral colored images against the black frame.   I also appreciate the extensive list of breeds they offer, 98 in total.  And, I am impressed that the artistic husband and wife team, Vivienne and Sponge, turned their artwork into a mass market product line, while still incorporating a cottage industry vibe — each print is hand colored.

I know a lot of artists read this blog, and becoming a "corporate" artist may not be for everyone, but it's inspiring to see dog art going mainstream and still looking good.

(Note: the images became a little blurry when enlarged.  Visit Ballard Design to get a clearer picture.  Also be aware that prints are available online only.)

Day 5 of my Holiday Gift Guide, and I intended to present an array of dog prints.  But then Michel Keck’s work showed up in my inbox this morning, and I couldn’t get past them.  I’ve featured may pop artists and many collage artists, but she is the first pop collage dog artists I’ve found.  I really like her work and I thought you would too.

Her open edition prints range from $35 -$399 depending on size.  They are available here.

  • Eleanor Grosch the Sometime Dog Artist

    Pomeranian

    Pomeranian

Eleanor Grosch is one of my favorite artists, but she rarely does dogs.  I found a few on her Pushmepullyou Design website and her blog.  I love her retro-modern graphic style which she compares to Charley Harper, whom she calls a “hero” and “the mentor she never knew she had!”  Surprisingly Elanor initiated her simple animal art before she ever saw Harper’s work.  When she discovered it, she felt she found a kindred spirit.

I see mid-century modern influences from Eastern European graphic designers in her work.  Her animals remind me of the Czechoslovakian and Russian zoo series matchbox labels.  And her birds are in a class by themselves.  My favorite is the loon…no wait, the peacock…no, maybe the crane…And, of course, her dogs are darling too!
