Minneapolis artist, Kat Corrigan, is diving in the deep end this summer when it comes to her dog art.   First, there is her “Dog Show” exhibition that opens tomorrow night, June 30, at the Key North Boutique.  Then, on July 1, she commences 30 Dog in 30 Days, an ambitious project she describes as “a dedicated painting practice, where the commitment to painting every day positively (and sometimes profoundly) affects the quality of the overall work.”  Half-way through the painting marathon she will give an artist’s talk on July 14, once again at Key North Boutique.  Then, she will mount an exhibition of all 30 dog paintings on August 19 at Diamond’s Coffee Shop, where she is also creating a space where the actual dog muses can attend.

If you’re not in Minneapolis to see this dynamo in action, visit her blog,  My AUTOBI-DOG-RAPHY, where she will be posting her completed dog each day.  If you are in Minneapolis, stop by one of her events with banana, some Gatorade, and a foil blanket.  Go Kat!

The paintings in this post are from Corrigan’s 30 Dogs in 30 Days 2010.  See them all here.

    Smooch

James Ruby, like Jeff Scher, is another painter I have waited for summer to share. Ruby’s  Pop-Realism inspired oil paintings capture the wet-nosed joy of high noon on a salty beach.  I can almost smell these hot dogs.

Sunflower and Dog Worship by Sir Stanley Spencer, 1937

On Wednesday June 15 2011 at Sotheby's London, seven works by Sir Stanley Spencer, described by the auctioneer as one of the 20th century's most important British painters, were on offer at the first section of a three-part sale of the Evill/Frost Collection.

The sales of these works totaled £23.0 million ($37.6 million), including a record £4.7 million ($7,705,337) for Workmen in the House, 1935, which was eclipsed minutes later by the £5.4 million($8,796,531) for Sunflower and Dog Worship, 1937, a painting depicting a husband and wife being embraced by giant flowers, said to be an exploation Sir Stanley's notion of universal harmony.

The other dog painting for sale, The Bathing Pool, Dogs, 1957, was estimated at £800,000 – 1,200,000 and it sold for £4,185,250 ($6,796,009).

    What recession?

Keep painting dogs and flowers and universal harmony.

    And have a great weekend!

The Great Escape by Betsy Doody

My sincerest apologies to Michigan artist, Betsy Doody.  She submitted this painting of naughty dogs to the 2011 Mutt Lynch Winery – Dog Art Today Wine Label contest and I thought I never received it.  But yesterday I was cleaning out my inbox and I discovered it.  I feel terrible that it was not included and wanted to share it with you as a small consolation to her.   Thank you for entering, Betsy.  I'm sorry.

Next year I will make sure all artists know they receive an email from me to confirm that I have received their work.

    Bonhams yearly dog art sale
which coincides with the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in NYC is tomorrow, February 16, 2011.  This year appears to be an interesting mix of traditional and whimsical.  Here are my picks, not the star of the show, which is this Black Lab painting by Maud Earl, but the pieces I like best.

  • Elizabeth Crowell and her Dog by Thomas Eakins

Elizabeth Crowell and her Dog by Thomas Eakins, 1873-74

Thomas Eakins (1844 – 1916) was a renowned painter, sculptor, and photographer known for depicting his fellow Philadelphians.

This week, Dog Art Today will look at great works of dog art in the city of Philadelphia.  For some reason, the city keeps popping up on my radar.  Feel free to leave me any tips in the comments section.

P.S. You may remember The Artist’s Wife and his Setter Dog by Thomas Eakins, I featured last November.  I think I like this painting of Elizabeth Crowell and her dog better.  It’s the red.

  • Gillie + Marc Schattner: Returning to the Animal Within

    Gillie_Marc_Schattner_1

He wondered what he had left behind

Australian husband and wife artists Gillie and Marc Schattner are at it again, getting all nakedy with dog heads.  I have no idea how a couple works together on the same piece of art, but I guess that’s what raising children is.  Gillie and Marc raise paintings, sculptures, and photographs instead.  I like to look for clues about their process and their love life in the names of the works, especially in their new show Returning to the Animal Within at Nexus Modern Art in Melbourne.  See what you think…

    Gillie_Marc_Schattner_2

He decided to live each day as if it was his last

    Gillie_Marc_Shattner_3

He didn’t know at the time, but years from now, he would look back
and realise that this was the happiest day of his life

    Gillie_Marc_Schattner_4

They weren’t in love but that didn’t really matter

    Some dogs do have clothes…

    Gillie_Marc_Schattner_5

At that moment he realised that happiness was right in front of him

    Gille_Marc_Schattner_8

He does my head in, but he’s and artist

    Gillie_Marc_Schattner_7

They were just friends until that unforgettable day happened when
they became more than friends.  What now…they thought?

Returning to the Animal Within opens in Melbourne on October 7, 2010 and runs until October 21, 2010. Visit Nexus Modern Art for more information.

I previously featured Gillie and Marc when their Good Boy caused a sensation in Sydney.  It is still one of my favorite dog sculptures.

  • Nicely Priced Prints from Heather LaHaise

    Heather_lahaise_3

I hate that advertising expression, "Now more than ever…"  As in, "Now more than ever you're looking to put food on the table."  Or "Now more than ever, you want to NOT get screwed by your stock broker."  But, now more than ever, purchasing art is not a priority.  That's why I love Heather LaHaise's new, very affordable, original signed prints.  Regular Dog Art Today readers know that Heather is one of my favorite contemporary dog artists.  I first wrote about her urban/southern duality here.  I featured her darling painting of my dog, Darby, here.  And wrote about her new series of rescue dog paintings here

Each signed print in her Dogwood series is $35.  (dog – wood, get it?)  The pieces are mounted on hand-stained umber or black 6" wooden cubes.   Gift wrapping is free.  To order prints email Heather at hlstudio@sc.rr.com

Now more than ever, it's time to do your Christmas shopping early.
