140 minute pet portraits by Aimée Hoover

In 2009 artist Aimée Hoover was inspired by Twitter’s 140 character limit to attempt painting custom dog portraits in 140 minutes.   She also used the new social network platform to launch a contest and give away a portrait to one lucky winner.  Since then, she has completed nine 140 minute pieces and the results (above) are simply wonderful.  Today, she launches her 10th giveaway via her facebook page.   Go to Aimée’s blog for the contest rules, includeing tips to increase your chances to win, and submit a photo of your pet. Deadline to enter is Monday, March 14, 2011 at midnight PST.

    Good luck!

  • Elliott Erwitt: Dachsund Photo and Twitter Contest

    Elliott_erwitt_dachshund_sunbather

No words can express how much I love this newly released photo by Elliott Erwitt, one of the greatest photographers of the 20th and 21st century.  The fact that Erwitt has devoted some of his extraordinary talent to photographing dogs, makes him, IMO, the greatest dog photographer ever.

Readers of this blog know I have featured him before and raved about him often.  But there has been a limited amount of his images available on the Web.  That has changed.  This week, German publishing house teNeues announced the launch of a new Elliot Erwitt Website featuring never before seen exclusive Erwitt photographs and a chance to interact with the iconic photographer himself via Twitter.  Here’s how it works; visit the website and choose a photo.  Click on the photo to take you to Twitter where you write a caption for the image.  Then, Elliot Erwitt will choose his favorite and the winner will receive a copy of one of his books.

I am not surprised that Erwitt has embraced social networking.  His photographs are exceptional because he looks at life with fresh eyes every time he takes a shot.  Experimenting with  new technology and paths of promotion is an extension of that openness, that inquisitive nature.  And it is yet another aspect of what makes him the best.

P.S. teNeues promises to release more Elliott Erwitt dog photographs as the Website evolves.  I will keep you posted.

  • Deaf Dogs Photo Book by Melissa McDaniel

    *sponsored feature*
    Melissa_mcdaniel_1

    {This post is written by one of my favorite dog photographers, Melissa McDaniel.}

When I first got my dog Sadie, I didn’t know anything about deaf dogs.  Sadie was relinquished to a local shelter after the owners found out she and all of her littermates were born deaf.  It wasn’t long before I learned two things about deaf dogs. One, although they require some different training techniques, for the most part, deaf dogs are just like any other dogs – just as smart, trainable, fun-loving, loving.  Two, many deaf dogs have a very rough start in life.  Negligent owners believe their dogs don’t listen to them because they are stupid or stubborn, which tragically leads to deaf dogs being abused.  Even worse, many deaf puppies aren’t given a chance at life – they are euthanized simply because they are deaf.   For these reasons, I started photographing for the photo book projects.  I wanted to create a photo book that showed the beauty of these dogs and told their stories, that raised awareness and perhaps changed some laws.

I’ve been traveling the country for a year now to photograph for the deaf dog photo book, and a subsequent book on rescued dogs.  I am hoping the sales of the books will raise $300,000 for animal rescue and deaf dog advocacy groups – but the only way that will happen is if I am able to raise the money for printing.  I’m publishing the books myself, and in an effort to raise money for the high printing costs, I am offering pre-orders and holding two contests.

If you believe in what I’m doing and would like to help in some way, enter your dog in the contest to be in this year’s photo book, pre-order the books (for you or for gifts) at a discount, or tell your rescue/shelter about the affiliate contest and get them involved.  Or, simply send your friends to this blog post to help spread the word.

The only way this project will make a difference is for people to see these books.  Thank you!  Your support of the projects is greatly appreciated by me (and Sadie!)!

  • Celebrate Dog Art Today’s 2nd Anniversary: Win a Valentino Pug Poster!

    Valentino_pug_poster

    Win this poster!

In honor of my blog turning two today, I have a gift for one lucky reader, a Valentino Pug poster.  This amazing prize was generously donated by the producers of Valentino: The Last Emperor, a documentary directed by Matt Tyrnauer that follows the Italian designer for the final two years of his celebrated career.  The film is also billed as a love story about Valentino and his business partner of 50 years, Giancarlo Giammetti.  And, from what I can tell, it is also a story about two men and their love for their five Pugs who jet around the world with them as one big glamorous happy family.

This poster is now a rare collector's item as they were initially distributed for publicity purposes only, and now have been discontinued.  I think it is a magnificent combination of art, beauty, fashion, history, and dog love.

If you would like to win it simply tell my why you love Pugs, or why you love Valentino, or why you love both in the comments section below.  On Thursday March, 19, 2009 the contest will end at noon and I will select a winner.  You can enter more than once if you have more than one thought on the subject.

    So sweet!

P.P.S.  Sorry to all my international readers, but this contest is limited to U.S. citizens only.
