Dogs as Shark Bait. Sign Petition to End Barbaric Practice.

Dog_shark_bait_photo

Please help.

Michèle of Eurodogtraining writes on her blog today about the horrific news that dogs and cats are being used as shark bait on the French-controlled island of Réunion off Africa's east coast.  This little guy is one that somehow escaped, recovered from his injuries, and was returned to his owners.

Although laws were passed making it illegal for fishing boats to carry any live or dead dogs or cats, dogs with hooks in them are still found weekly on the island.

Please take a moment to visit Michèle's blog and sign the petition to enforce these laws and end this barbaric practice.

You have got to be kidding me? This is horrendous. That dog was so lucky to have survived. What is with all the crazy, mean people in this world?

I know, Mia. I feel so sick about this. I almost didn’t want to put it on my “pretty” blog. That is sick too. But also a human desire to look away from something horrendous. Hopefully, spreading the word and signing the petition can do something to end this practice.

I am shocked! i know there are so many disgusting things in this wold but now this? bringing awareness to this is so important! thanks for sharing Moira and I will definitely sign the petition and send it along to my clients.

Thanks, Sabrina. It is even more disturbing than I wrote. They actually put the hooks in the dogs the day before they use them, to get them covered in blood first. Evil.

    sick! that is so tragic!
its a double issue for me, im a huge supporter of banning shark fishing as well. sharks are becoming quickly endangered and are so vital to our oceans eco- system which in turn is vital to human survival on this planet. if your interested i saw a great documentary called “sharkwater” directed by rob stewart. it brings attention to all the illegal fishing practices and how vulnerable the life under the sea really is.

What a terrible thing!!It’s just like when I heard that in Azores some fisherman were using dolphin meet as bait for fishing sardines or something! This was a long time ago but I never forget it!I’ll check that and post it on my nephew’s shar pei dog as well!

This kind of thing makes me so mad! I’m signing the petition as soon as I leave your blog! I’ll make sure to send the link to all my friends!!

Thanks, everyone for clicking through to Michele’s blog and signing the petition.
Monica – the Snopes article says that this practice *is* employed by amateur fishermen. I felt like it was important to err on the side of the dogs. Even if this is not a widespread commercial technique, saving one dog is worth it.
Also, the article tries to minimize the practice by saying that the dogs are mostly strays. In the National Geographic article they cite cases of rescued dogs finding homes after their ordeal. Raising awareness of this practice and giving the strays a possibility of finding homes is a win/win.

I don’t care if only a few do this. It is wrong and sickens me. Please do what is needed to stop this practice totally.

I followed all the links to news concerning this issue available on the net, contacted the NG,also Brigite Bardot´s association and 30 million friends oragnization so I can understand what happened since they caught and judge the fisherman that baited a dog-not the dog on the photo – back in 2005 to present day.I am waiting answers and if I get it I’ll inform you.

This picture just blows me away. How cruel for someone to treat a dog like meat. It’s bad enough that they eat dogs in Asia, but to use them as bait I think goes too far.

It is horrible. I do agree. Even if the practice isn’t widespread.
