Now on view at Sushi Bar Gallery in Brooklyn, Yale Photo Instagram, 36 photographs of 19 alumni of the Yale Photography MFA program.

As Instagram continues to enter the art world and the artist's hand, the emphasis between this specific group of photographers and this social media filter become unlikely cohorts, creating a series of pairings that straddle the fences between accessibility and prestige, personal and professional, public and intimate, analog and digital. And so, we are excited to join the sweeping trend of "Instagram shows," this time, giving stage to this specific demographic of picture makers.

  • 1,000 Dog Portraits by Robynne Raye

    1000-Dog-Portraits-by-Robynne-Raye-cover

1000 Dog Portraits Curated and Authored by Robynne Raye,
    Cover Illustration by Alison Barlow

After years of legal wrangling, including being forced to sell her studio to pay her lawyers, Robynne Raye of Modern Dog Design Company announced on January 2, 2014 that a settlement had been reached in her copyright infringement case against Target, Disney, and Jaya Apparel. The settlement amount was undisclosed. But the case is a victory for every artist who has ever been bullied by corporate entitlement.

During the legal saga, Robynne was floored by one of the opposing counsel’s comments (implying that her case had no merit) because, “You know, there are only so many ways you can draw a beagle.”

As an artist and graphic designer, Robynne knew this was false and that the best way to illustrate it was to illustrate it. The first chapter of 1,000 Dog Portraits: From the People Who Love Them
was born; “How Many Ways Can You Draw a Beagle?”

Her call to artists then surpassed just the Beagle to include all breeds, mixed breeds, and imaginative canine interpretations. When I sent in my image of Darby, I had mixed feelings. I don’t know why. Well, I do know why; it was because I was feeling like here’s another opportunity for “great exposure” and no return.

But, FOMO (fear of missing out) took over. And now, I am so glad I submitted a piece and feel so honored to be included.

Robynne Raye fought a brave and tenacious battle on behalf of us all. I don’t know anyone else who would have forged ahead and accomplished so much facing similar odds. And I don’t know how, in the middle of it all, without knowing the outcome, she had the presence to create such an exuberant love letter to dogs and art. It’s hard for me to review it without bias because it includes by beloved boy, so I will defer to Amazon reviewer K. Niles who says:

“This book is Awesome! It’s like CRACK for dog addicts and dog-art lovers.”

I will add, that I was delighted to see so many names I knew, and humbled by so many names I didn’t.  I think it would be an incredible book to give to a young artist, or use in an art class.  And, it would be a terrific Mother’s Day gift for your dog crazy mom.

Also, if you purchase it on Amazon via this link, 1,000 Dog Portraits: From the People Who Love Them I receive a nifty little percentage of the sale, and I would be ever so grateful.

  • 72-Hour Valentine’s Day Ad Sale

    Vintage-valentines-day-card-2

February 13 to February 16 sidebar ads are 20% off with a three-month buy.

There's never been a better time to advertise on Dog Art Today. Here's why:

    • We've improved traffic stats. Passionfruit, the company that serves the ads, recently launched their new dashboard that allows you to track the ad views and click-throughs. So now you can see exactly how many people are coming from my website to yours.
    • Dog Art Today will be in the news. In the next month, three highly-respected dog blogs on three different continents will be featuring "Beasts of Burden" with links to Dog Art Today. (I'm trying to remain calm.)
    • These prices won't last. I know that sounds corny. But I haven't raised ad prices in over a year (although one client graciously shared that he thought I wasn't charging enough). So if you've been considering trying one of these ads, now's the time.

As always, Dog Art Today features ads from individuals and companies I'm proud to promote. No corporate clutter will appear beside your work of art.

    Rates: $35 x 3 months = $105 – 20% = $84*

*plus a $45 graphic design fee to ensure design consistency

    Grand total: $129/three months

    To get started email me.

    Happy Valentine's Day!

Dog Art Today Headquarters in Grass Valley, California by Erin Thiem, September 2013

There's been some nice press for Dog Art Today recently.

I was interviewed for Paula Magazine a Chilean magazine for women.  Their September issue was devoted to dogs.   I discussed the history of dogs in art, the number of artists I've featured on my blog (over 1,350) since it's inception, and scatalogical trends in dog art today.

    Dog-art-today-moira-mclaughlin-paula-magazine

Dog Art Today in Paula Magazine

Although some of my thoughts were lost in translation or edited out (read the original article here and the translation here), I was so happy they included my Darby collage January: The Seed Catalogs Are Here.  See more of my work at Etsy.

And I was pleased they included a controversial environmental art installation that debuted last month here in town, Nevada City Alchemy by Daniel Brickman, five golden dog poop statues placed along the Tribute Trail as a commentary on waste, the Gold Rush, and the effects of culture on the watershed, part of ART OnSite, an exciting dog-friendly local art project I will be writing more about soon.

Dog Art Today was also featured on Crittr in a comprehensive review by J.D. Biersdorfer…

Then, make an appointment (I think you might have to wait until 2014 — but find a doctor and make the appointment now) for that mammogram, blood pressure test, yearly physical, or pap smear you've put off because it's not an emergency.

  • Tabloid by Errol Morris

I watched Errol Morris’s 2011 documentary “Tabloid” yesterday.

    Ohh…mah..gah…

The New York Times calls it a story of “a bit of good, clean, dirty fun.”  But it’s really a story of a woman and her dogs.

    It’s on Netflix. Enjoy.
