  • Lauren Davies: The Breeders

    Westie
    Westie

As a teen, San Francisco artist Lauren Davies was obsessed with dogs. She worked at a kennel, she enjoyed training dogs, and she even won a silver plate as a junior handler at a major dog show. In later years, art school, jobs, and other interests took over until, as an adult, she let 3 dogs into her life and her obsession rekindled.

She is now working on one of the most interesting dog art projects I’ve come across. She is creating miniature purebred dogs to scale using the fur from each breed. So the 11′ Poodle is made with all Poodle fur and the 5″ Maltese is all Maltese fur. I love when an artist can find art even in her dustpan.

  • How To Make An Origami Barking Dog

In case you’re snowbound with kids who have watched all their videos, played all their games, and read all their books, here’s a project that will keep them occupied for a good half hour. It’s quite ingenious!

  • 2nd Art Basel Miami Dog(s) Spotted

    Ashima_trophy_yellow

Well it’s not at the main show, but I found this intriguing object d’art, Ahimsa Trophy Yellow, at the Fragiles showcase of porecelain, ceramics and glass presented at Design Miami (and via Cool Hunting.) I count two puppies here. There could be more on the back. Gorgeous!

I found My Sweet Dog Pulltoy on a daddytypes.com a cool weblog for new dads.  What’ so appealing about Nara’s wooden pulltoy, beyond it’s clean pop aesthetic, is it’s handcrafted by artisans in France — not lead-based China.  This toy really could be a fun AND safe investment for you or your child.
You can also adorn your wall with this Yoshitomo Nara poster, Do Not Disturb!

  • Laurel Peterson Gregory’s Dancing Dogs

    Bump
    (Bump)

Laurel Peterson Gregory thinks life is too serious. To combat this, she creates art “to lift the viewer and take them to a better place for a timeless moment.” As a renowned sculptor she knows exactly what she’s doing. Just take a look at her bronze Dancing Dogs and try not to smile. Thanks Laurel, for brightening my day!

  • Huang Yong Ping’s Amerigo Vespucci Dog Sculpture

    Huangyongping

Artnet’s Walter Robinson strolls the property of art collector Jerome Stern and discovers his fondness for art in the woods. One of the fabulous sculptures he finds on Stern’s 17-acre Quioque, NY estate is Huang Yong Ping’s Amerigo Vespucci — a life-sized aluminum Mastiff urinating a puddle in the shape of the United States. It’s one of several works celebrating the “primordial theme of relieving oneself.” Take a woodsy walk, visit Stern’s artbarn, and have your own primordial encounter with art and nature by appointment only.

  • Needle Felted Soft Sculptures by Amelia

    Feltsaffy

Amelia of AmeliaMakesArt was and is an avid painter, but one day she made a needle felted sculpture of a dog, and suddenly commissions for more poured in. One look at these charming likenesses and you can see why. A happy client calls her felted sculpture her “most prized possession — after the real thing of course.”

    Feltboxer

These guys look like Rhett, our family’s Wirehaired Dachshund. I just love them.

Sculptures are $74 each. Sizes range from 5″x5″ to 7″x8″ depending on the dog breed. Cats are 6″x6″. Perfect Christmas gifts. Order now!

Also, Amelia’s felted dogs are part of the Puppies Are Biodegradable show at F.U.E.L in Philadelphia, mounted to raise awareness of the horrors of puppy mills in Lancaster County and throughout the country. There are plans for the show to tour the states over the next few months. I will keep you posted.

  • Sarah Regan Snavely: Great Greyhound Sculptures

    Runout
    Run Out 2004

Sarah Regan Snavely’s Greyhound sculptures are quite brilliant. Somehow they look both contemporary and ancient – like treasures found at an Etruscan dig site. I absolutely love them and had trouble picking my favorites. Here are a few from this highly collected, award-winning North Dakota artist who sees dogs as ” nifty little alien-like creatures [who] have infiltrated our world.” Cosmic!

  • Jeff Koons’s Dog Pool Panty

    Dogpoolpanty

The Telegraph’s Alastair Sooke reports on Jeff Koons’s Hulk Elvis and Popeye shows at London’s Gagosian Galleries. Read about the artist’s 85 assistants, the purity of his intent, and a quasi-awkward “payback” moment between Koons and BritArt superstar Damien Hist.

“A Great deal of [Koons’s] work,” Sooke writes, “evokes innocence – but at the same time feels saturated with sex.” That’s certainly true for the Dog Pool Panty (above) –- a painted aluminium cast of a kiddie wading pool topped with a sexy lingerie photo. Shows run until July 27.

  • Michael John dePierro: Clock Ticks on Custom Art Ebay Auction!

    Whitedog2

I feel like Jack Bauer trying to pick which of Michael John dePierro’s sculptures to post as the 24-hour auction clock ticks away. He is running a great promotion on Ebay today, offering a custom work of your dog starting at $49. His work usually sells for $120. These are some of my favorites, but he has dozens of amazing dog sculptures and has sold over 200 to date.

And thanks to Kenneth Treacy for discovering Michael’s work and passing it on to me. So in keeping with Micheal’s PARTS of a Larger World philosophy that “All we create affects and is affected by life’s experiences.” Artists helping artists, I guess that’s my Dog Art Today philosophy too. Now, get in there and bid. Father’s Day is right around the corner!
