  • Polaroid Dogs on Polanoid

    Founded in 2004 by a couple of Viennese photography execs jonesing for the smell of analog in a digital world, Polanoid aims to be the world’s largest collection of Polaroid snapshots. Judging from the 116,335 pictures uploaded as of today, I think they’ve succeeded.

    The site is brilliantly designed to display the full glory of the Polaroid snapshot’s image to border ratio and the founders are passionately commercial free. To finance their project they sell what else – Polaroids – at Unsaleable.com where addicts feed their cravings for instant gratification with all things Polaroid. Genius!

    A search for dogs on Polanoid turned up these gorgeous images.

    Sotheby's New York opens a Grace, Princess of Monaco Exhibition on October 15 that will feature some of her favorite dresses, jewelry and personal belongings, as well as photos, films and documents that capture the essence of her life.

    I don't know if the following images will be included, so I decided to create my own Grace Kelly tribute featuring her beloved dogs.

    Here is a video of Grace, her family and her wedding party on the Constitution. There are some darling shots of her and Oliver at the end.

    I wanted to include this ITN Souce video (click on clip #6), but it cost $20 a second to embed it. View it for free on their site. Watch closely at the end and you'll see Grace Kelly walking down the gangway to meet her prince and she's carrying her Poodle. Prince Rainier kindly picks up the leash she is dragging behind her and escorts her to the car. It's the only time I've ever seen Grace Kelly with a single thing out of place and I think it makes her so endearing — holding on to her dog for security as she faces her new life — and then she ominously disappears into the fortress-like castle.

    I always feel like I like Diane Arbus’s work more that I love it. I think it’s too melancholy for my walls. But I’m happy to share it on my blog. This 1964 image is up for auction at Christie’s, New York on October 18. Estimated price: $18,000 – 22,000.

    This week marks the one-year anniversary of Lee Anderson going to the dogs. Anderson worked as a professional photographer since 1980. His clients included USA Today, Christie’s and AOL. Over the years, his life evolved. He married graphic designer Donna Sicklesmith and he became a dad to Audrey and Ian.

    Then in 2000 he got a dog. Dakota, a brown standard poodle, joined the family and stirred something in Anderson. The truth is, as a kid, he always wanted to be a vet. Dakota reignited this latent love for animals and when a few friends raved about his framed photos of him last September, his new dog photography business was born. Now, with his wife Donna as his manager and web designer, Anderson Photography is wowing clients up and down the East Coast.

    Based in Alexandria, VA, but willing to travel, the couple has exploded into the competitive dog photography world with their passion for offbeat, perfectly presented photos (Lee likes to seamlessly enhance his images with his Photoshop expertise) and their brand of black and white square images.

    Inspired by the Hasselblad format and committed to seeing the photos as not merely pretty snapshots, but works of art, Lee’s square dog shots are now frequently spotted as Anderson originals.

    I love the gentle, yet crisp lighting and the obvious intimacy he has with the dogs, somehow capturing that awesome feeling you get when you hold your dog close and see yourself in their eyes.

    I think Anderson would have made a good vet, but he seems more pleased that he’s come full circle as a photographer and an animal lover. This way he gets to enjoy the happy healthy dogs at their best and give their owners artwork they will cherish forever. Perfect!

  • Dogs, War, and Death

    Neil Lewis of the New York Times reports on a stunning artifact recently donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum: a photo album of the daily life of the SS officers of Auschwitz.

    Compiled by Karl Höcker, the adjutant to the camp commandant, the scrapbook includes 116 photos, some of young men and women enjoying themselves at sing-alongs, relaxing at an Alpine lodge and cheekily turning their bowls upside down after eating fresh blueberries. The book also includes the only known photos of Josef Mengele, the notorious camp doctor, taken of him at Auschwitz.

    The NYT provides an excellent slide show narrated by USHM archivist Rebecca Erbelding, who discusses the magnitude of this recent find and its chilling depiction of “the banality of evil.” Also, I highly recommend visiting the USHM website to see all the photographs. I have only picked out the ones of Höcker playing with his dog Favorit.

    With all the OJ Simpson coverage this last week, you may not have heard of the recent finding by ORB, a British polling agency, that 1.2 million Iraqi civilians have been killed since the start of the war.

    On a final note, Ken Burns’s documentary The War begins this Sunday on PBS. Perhaps revisiting the reality of war through the eyes of those who lived it will finally register with our representatives and our president. Perhaps they’ll realize that the acceptable collateral damage of war equals human lives. And that it’s not acceptable. It’s barbaric.

  • Alec Soth: Dog Days, Bogota

    In 2002 photographer Alec Soth and his wife traveled to Bogota, Columbia to adopt a baby girl. While the paperwork was being processed Alec photographed the city in hopes of capturing the “hard beauty” of his daughter’s birthplace as a keepsake for her.
