I picked up my farm share from Four Frog Farm today. I was pleased with the tomatoes, potatoes, corn, peppers, melon, and garlic in the box, but Maggie told me to wait, she had to go into the cooler and get the basil. She brought out this bouquet and told me to keep it in water. I did, and it is so beautiful I had to share.
I don't know Weezer's music but my brother-in-law Greg Cameron just saw them in concert on Saturday and he thinks..

I think their new album cover is fantastic, especially because it's not digitally enhanced. (BTW, I am really a Browns fan, but I root for the Steelers when they are not playing each other. My parents live in Pittsburgh, and let's face it how much heartbreak can a person take?)

I've wanted to feature The Grace Museum's exhibition Best Friends: The Dog as Subject in Fine Art Photography since the show opened on August 13. But I didn't post about it because I couldn't find any images. Then, on Saturday, Brian Bethel of the Abilene Reporter News wrote about the show and included these photographs along with the stories behind the shots. The personal collection of photographers Bill and Alice Wright's dog-centric pictures (including some of Bill's own work) is more profound, funny and soulful than I even imagined. As Bill puts it:
"…all the photos 'speak to so many different emotions,' he said,
although sense of fellowship permeates many — the conventional label of 'man’s best friend' being easily apparent."
I love that word, "fellowship," applied to our relationship with dogs. It conveys equality and mutual reciprocation, not a master/owner attitude. I've never heard our bond with dogs described that way and I think it is just perfect.

The New York Times reports that in several scientific studies, more than half the subjects were able successfully match breed to owner or even person to pet. Results were far better than chance. When NJ-based photographer, Lauren Grabelle, pitched me the idea to feature her work of "dogs at play, " I put her email on the back burner. Her work is terrific, but I had done action shots before, and I am always looking for something new.
Later, when I had some time to visit her site, the shots I really responded to were the intimate ones of dogs and their owners. I think Lauren's ability to capture the bond dog lovers have with their pets is extraordinary. It makes perfect sense that her undergraduate work was in Anthropology, because these photos are really more about the owners than their dogs. You can sense their intoxication, that split second when oxytocin levels soar and dog love consumes them. Realy beautiful work, Lauren. Thank you for sharing.
