Leprechauns and Dinner Discovered in my Yard
Darby in the former goat penNo, I didn’t eat Leprechaun stew for St. Patrick’s Day, but I did discover a delectable green called miner’s lettuce growing wild all over my yard, mostly in the super-fertilized former goat pen. Supposedly the gold miners ate this leafy green to prevent scurvy. I Googled it and found many food bloggers raving about finding it at local farmers’ markets and providing recipes. I made dinner of miner’s lettuce, asparagus, crimini mushrooms and rigatoni with scramble eggs from the chickens next door. We listened to Irish pub music on Pandora and it was the greenest St. Patrick’s Day I’ve had in a long time. Or as Layla would say, “Stupendous!”Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Happy Birthday Dog Art Today!

Dog Art Today, a blog I started as an "experiment, a vague challenge to myself to see if I could to it," turns three this month. As I head into year four, I continue to be amazed by the depth and breadth of dog artists I discover and the infinitely creative ways dogs appear in every form of art. I remember so clearly when I first started blogging I worried I wouldn't have enough content to fill more than a few weeks of posts. Seriously, I had a list of a few dozen dog artists and that was it. I would be done. Now, 842 posts and over half a million pageviews later, I have trouble keeping up with the vast amount of artworks I plan to feature. So even though I write this blog, it continues to surprise me. And I love that, the endless inspiration, the joyful depiction of dogs, and the eternal bond that they have made with the artists in their lives. Thank you for your tips, your comments, and for sharing your love of dogs and art with me. It is a privilege, every day.

The Obama Dog Blog is Back!

As many of you know, I used to cover the first dog at my other blog, The Obama Dog Blog. In January, I made the difficult decision to end that coverage after I found I couldn't give Bo the attention he deserves. Then, out of the blue I was contacted by a reader and fan of Bo named Stephanie Dahle who asked if she could keep the blog going. I was thrilled and handed over the editor's duties to her.
Stephanie is a journalist at Forbes. She earned her B.A. in Journalism, History and Middle Eastern & Islamic Studies from New York University. She is originally from Minnesota, and now lives in New York City. She loves coffee, running and, of course, dogs. With no pup to call her own at the moment, her heart belongs to Bo.

Sadie the Scottie Wins Best in Show
Sadie ignores the paparazziSadie, the spectacular Scottie who entered the competition as the favorite having won over 100 best in show ribbons in her career, took home the top honors at the 134 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Looking for a good photo of her, I am once again reminded of the amazing skill of the pet photographers I feature here. Daylife has a great collection of shots, many of which illustrate how difficult it is to truly capture the essence of dogs on film, especially black ones. I chose this Reuters photo because I love the cool expression of this athlete who did exactly what she planned to do, dominate. Congratulations, Sadie and handler Gabriel Rangel.

Westminster Kennel Club Best in Show Winner to be Picked Tonight

Tonight they judge the Sporting, Working, and Terrier Groups, and select the Best in Show. The show begins at 8pm ET on USA. But it is shown time-delayed at 8pm to West Coast viewers. Visit the WKC website for more information and highlights of last night's judging.

Casting Call: Los Angeles Dogs + Their Owners
LA photographer Grace Chon, whose hilariously brilliant Les Chiens Erotique (Erotic Dogs) was recently featured on an episode of “How I Met Your Mother,” is looking for a few good dogs and their owners, and possibly some cats. She is casting a photo shoot for a national pet store campaign and needs to find some specific types for her clients. Here’s the breakdown:
- A couple mid to late 30’s, early 40’s with dog(s)
- A couple late 20’s, early 30’s with dog(s)
- A family with children 5 yro – 10 yro with dog(s)
- A couple mide to late 30’s, early 40’s with dog and cat

Deaf Dogs Photo Book by Melissa McDaniel

When I first got my dog Sadie, I didn’t know anything about deaf dogs. Sadie was relinquished to a local shelter after the owners found out she and all of her littermates were born deaf. It wasn’t long before I learned two things about deaf dogs. One, although they require some different training techniques, for the most part, deaf dogs are just like any other dogs – just as smart, trainable, fun-loving, loving. Two, many deaf dogs have a very rough start in life. Negligent owners believe their dogs don’t listen to them because they are stupid or stubborn, which tragically leads to deaf dogs being abused. Even worse, many deaf puppies aren’t given a chance at life – they are euthanized simply because they are deaf. For these reasons, I started photographing for the photo book projects. I wanted to create a photo book that showed the beauty of these dogs and told their stories, that raised awareness and perhaps changed some laws.
I’ve been traveling the country for a year now to photograph for the deaf dog photo book, and a subsequent book on rescued dogs. I am hoping the sales of the books will raise $300,000 for animal rescue and deaf dog advocacy groups – but the only way that will happen is if I am able to raise the money for printing. I’m publishing the books myself, and in an effort to raise money for the high printing costs, I am offering pre-orders and holding two contests.
