Lucy and the Protesters by Kathleen McLaughlin

I was looking for photos of dogs at the Occupy Wall Street protests and wasn't finding anything special, when I noticed that my sister, Kathleen, posted this photo of her daughter Lucy at the occupation watching a musician while a dog frolicked on a mattress nearby.  I asked Kathleen for her take on what she saw last Sunday, October 2, 2011, the day more than 700 people were arrested on the Brooklyn Bridge.

Here is Kathleen's account of her visit to Zuccotti Park:

This [photo] was taken Sunday afternoon around 2pm, so definitely after the Brooklyn Bridge arrests.  The mood is pretty mellow, organized squalor is maybe the best way to describe it.  Lots of young people who really want to be a part of something, a few crazies and some career activists.  There doesn't seem to be much leadership to speak of, but everyone seems to be getting along and happy to be there.  I had to walk by on Wednesday and Thursday during the day and there weren't nearly as many people.  Not sure if that's because it was growing or because it was a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

There are plenty of police but not ominous at all.  They've got a portable watchtower thingy and lots of uniformed and non-uniformed officers and some are taking videos.  In general, though, the cops are pretty chill.  It would be too bad if they made the cops the enemy really because they represent exactly the kind of middle class that is getting squeezed out.  Marching with permits, instead of blocking traffic and it wouldn't have been an issue.

What's hard to see in pictures and movies is that this park (which happens to be private and owned by a big real estate group) is literally right next door to Ground Zero.  There's always a pretty big cop presence and with the recent memorial opening it's been even greater.  We also had that crazy protest last year about the Muslim community center.

The other thing is the tourists.  Tons of tourists.   And the protest is becoming another thing to see when coming downtown to see Ground Zero.

    Lucy thinks it's awesome.

The official Occupy Wall Street website explains the movement like this:

Occupy Wall Street is leaderless resistance movement with people of many colors, genders and political persuasions. The one thing we all have in common is that We Are the 99% that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%. We are using the revolutionary Arab Spring tactic to achieve our ends and encourage the use of nonviolence to maximize the safety of all participants.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 5, 2011 promises to be the largest day of protest yet.  Also, if you can't make it to the Manhattan rally, MoveOn.org is sponsoring a virtual occupation here.

Nevada County residents, there is information about our local movement at Occupy Wall Street Nevada County.  They are planning a rally on Wednesday October 14, at the Brunswick Walgreen's at 4:30.

Heartwrenching testimonials about what it means to be part of the 99% in modern America are being collected at We Are the 99%.

The light is getting low these days.  A storm is coming in.  I'm off to get firewood and homemade goat cheese.

    Have a great weekend.

P.S.  There is a lovely essay by Robert Lipsyte in The New York Times about how a dog changed his life.  It's called Four Legs and an Eye for Landscaping.

Sixty-three prints of Minneapolis-based photographer Mary Ludington are on view at the Ella Sharp Museum in Jackson, Michigan.  The works come from Ludington's book The Nature of Dogs, a project in which she set out to "bypass the sentimental layer" we impose on dogs and "make them more distant from us in order to reveal something new about them."  As I said when I first wrote about her work, the nature of dogs that she reveals through her photographs just makes me feel more sentimental about them.  The paradox of dog-love.

  • The Last Summer Weekend

Although summer came late, it was filled with everything I wanted, including a girls' weekend that was so fun we made a solemn pact not to post about it online.  But one photo surfaced today on my friend Ruth's blog Camping in Style.  I had to share….

Enjoy this last summer weekend.  Take lots of photos.

In the days following the attacks on 9/11 nearly 100 search and rescue dogs were deployed by FEMA to the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.  Ten years later, Dutch photographer Charlotte Dumas tracked down the surviving fifteen, who who now live in retirement with their original handlers througout the country.   She captured these exquisite photographs.

Today, Thursday, September 8, 2011, a selection of Dumas's photographs are on view at Julie Saul Gallery in Chelsea, NY.  Dumas also published a book entitled Retrieved which is available at The Ice Plant.

On September 29, 2011, Clic Bookstore & Gallery in Manhattan is hosting an event where one print of each dog from limited editions of seven will be for sale to benefit the First Responders Alliance.  For more information visit Clic Bookstore & Gallery.

Also, in August The New York Times did a slide show tribute to these dogs, detailing their accomplishments, their subsequent missions (many were deployed in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina), and their recent activities in retirement.  Click here to view it.  Have a box of tissues handy.  Since being photographed, some of these heroes have passed away and all of them "embody a decade that is coming to a close."

Georgia O'Keeffe on Evening Walk with her Dog, Ghost Ranch, by John Loengard, 1966

I just finished reading Full Bloom: The Art and Life of Georgia O'Keeffe by Hunter Drohojowska-Philp.  I highly recommend it.  I posted about Georgia O'Keeffe and her dogs here, but now I know a little more about them.  Her first dog was a standard Black Poodle named Pancho.  When he was killed by a car, a neighbor gave her two blue Chow puppies she named Bo and Chia.  Bo was her favorite, but sadly he was hit by a truck and killed.  But she became devoted to the Chow breed and ended up having six during her lifetime including Bobo, Jinga, and Inca.

  • Lucian Freud Dies at 88

Eli, David Dawson's Whippet, in the Artist's Studio by David Dawson

Lucian Freud, a man who redefined the portrait, died on Wednesday July 20, 2011.  He was as gifted at painting naked flesh as he was at capturing the essence of dogs.  They often appeared with his subjects; entangled, sleeping, head and limbs heavy, with an insolent gaze.  Supposedly Freud liked their arrogance and the way they relaxed his subjects and allowed him to see the animal in them.  He was known to quote T.S. Eliot's Preludes:

I am moved by fancies that are curled
    Around these images, and cling:
The notion of some infinitely gentle
    Infinitely suffering thing.

Today, writer Gerry Cordon has posted a beautiful tribute to Lucian Freud and his dogs here.  In 2007, I wrote about Lucian Freud's dog art, his Grandfather Sigmund Freud's relationship to his dogs, and his daughter Bella's dog-love here.  See more photos of Lucian Freud's studio and his dogs by David Dawson here.
