In honor of Bastille Day today, I’m sharing one of my favorite dog artists who happens to be Parisian. Jeanne Lortat-Jacob studied at the Ecole Nationale Des Arts Appliqués Duperré. She is the winner of the French national drawing prize in 1984. In her early career she worked in film as a production designer before focusing on graphic design and multimedia projects.
For the past year, she has worked on her project the “Portrait CANIN,” which was featured on a Canal + TV program devoted to her work as a portrait artist. Regarding her recent favorite subjects, Jeanne Lortat-Jacob reflects, “Dogs for me [are] a work of art in themselves. Their expressions reflect the world around them. Through my painting, I try to extract from them the consciousness signified by their posture. I empathize with the dog I paint, whatever its politics, class, or place of origin.”
Vive la France! Vive le chien!
