Dog Art Today Redesign — Any Thoughts?

DAT_redesign_scan_post

I’ve been thinking about a redesign for a while.  Here is my  Pinterest board.  My vision is a contemporary art museum — a place that takes dog art seriously.  I’m curious what you think.  What you like about how Dog Art Today is now, what could be better (really — I want to know), who you are, what would be helpful to you as an artist, dog lover, art collector?

Please take this survey and let me know your thoughts.  It’s short, 10 questions.

If you take it you will be eligible to win a set of greeting cards with my Darby: June collage on it.  To enter first complete the survey,  then leave your name in the comments section below.

If you don’t feel like taking a survey, but have been meaning to tell me something about my blog, email me privately.

Contest and survey will close on Monday, January 15, 2012 at noon PST.

Thank you — Moira

I can’t read most of the layout of the new design idea, so it’s hard to comment on it but I like the idea of it being more changeable like a facebook timeline- and that older posts will show up on the new post but in a subservient position. Sometimes I miss a post and it would be handy to have it still available without searching for it on it’s own page. And sometimes the posts relate, so having it right there is convenient and relevant.

I really love looking at all the different styles of dog art and stories about dogs! Love them all! My four rescue dogs always sit in my art room while I’m painting. Each one tries to find the best spot to sit next to me! They are a treat, can’t imagine not having dogs!!! You have a wonderful site – love everything about it!

Thanks Nancy. I totally agree. I like sites that have lots of visual ques about what might interest you. I think we are moving away from reading when it comes to the Internet. I am going to try to make Dog Art Today a more visual place without being too cluttered. Thanks for your input.

Karla – your studio sounds like a dream — with so many warm bodies, “personalities,” and I’m sure frequent antics. I really don’t know how someone could be an artist without being a dog artist — meaning even if they don’t make their dogs the subject of their work, a dog gives you such a sense of grounding — so you can focus, and a feeling of energy — so you can get things done. Someone said to me that they felt completely untethered from the world when they lost their dog. It was exactly how I feel, like I can’t get my footing. I think we as artists instinctively know that dogs are essential to the creative process. They give us permission to be still as they nap for hours and then force us to step away and take a walk — and really that’s where the creative breakthroughs happen — on those walks.

Excellent directive — gives me permission and support. So appreciative of both. Thanks, Robb!

Great site, Moira. Keep up the good work. As I mentioned in the survey, hope you’ll check out Gwarlingo. Some good ideas there. Your blog is similar to hers in ways – and I do think artists like to read longer pieces when the pieces are targeted at their working process, marketing, etc. Am sure it’s a balance for you to figure out how to make your different audiences happy. Thanks!

oops I meant visual cues — “visual ques” would be very annoying ; )

Thank you, Susan. Survey Monkey kept trying to show me how to write non-biased questions. I know my methodology was not industry standard, but I wanted to find out what I wanted to find out. It will be interesting to see the final results. I will share the general directions and feedback I get.

Wow!!! I just visited Gwarlingo for the first time. I am blown away (and flattered by the comparison). It is so inspiring on many levels. I love her photos of artists spaces. I am hearing from the survey, that people like the “Studio Spotlight” section on Dog Art Today, so I am going to feature that more prominently here, too. Also, I just listened to Gwarlingo’s author on NPR and she beautifully expresses the idea that artists want community. And that art is a gift not a commodity. I am going to share her blog here (did you see the photos of George Bernard Shaw — the one with his dog — http://www.gwarlingo.com/2011/george-bernard-shaw-exposed/, I will be sure to give you a “hat tip” for telling me about it. Thank you, Anna. Keep any ideas or other inspirations coming.

Love seeing your blog and I don’t read many these days! You could leave it similar or make changes as re the older post search ease.
Will review your layout again later, but it’s a bit hard to read so small…..also, I’m more knowledgeable re websites than re blogs, but I always will give you my point of view as an art director and reader :>)
    Good luck !
