William Secord always has a something special during the week of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in NYC.   This year, over 150 animal-themed works (mostly dogs) from the Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge Collection are on view at his gallery.  Sales from the exhibition benefit the organization founded by Mrs. Dodge in 1939, Saint Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison, New Jersey.

Mrs. Dodge is a legend in the purebred dog world. She founded the Morris and Essex Kennel Club in 1927, and bred and imported some of America’s most important English Cocker Spaniels, German Shepherds, Bloodhounds, Pointers, Setters and Schipperkes, among others.  She is also the first woman to judge Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden.  You can view the exhibition online.  Here are some of my favorites:

    Party Animal by Pamela Hall

    William Secord
kicks off the frenetic dog art season of February in New York City (to coincide with the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show) with an exhibition of Pamela Hall's work entitled "The Comforts of Home."  The solo show opens February 13, 2010 and features over twenty paintings of popular breeds in domestic settings.  I think my favorite is Party Animal, but you can see them all online here and decide for yourself.

William Secord, the premiere dog painting gallerist, will also be at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show exhibiting nineteenth century and contemporary dog art works at Booth 126 opposite the benching area at Madison Square Garden February 15-16.

The show, Constance Coleman's Tibetan Journey; The Dogs and Animals of Tibet, opens tomorrow October 16, 2008 at the William Secord Gallery in NYC.  Coleman has been a prominent pet portrait artist for 30 years.  After turning eighty and traveling to Tibet, she was so inspired, she returned to paint the animals in the Kham region.  There, Colman…

"…found many dogs of mixed Tibetan breeds to paint. Some of the dogs were kept as pets, some were guard dogs or shop dogs, and some were the cherished temple dogs. These temple dogs are believed to be the reincarnation of monks who have not yet reached Nirvana, and are therefore very precious to the people of Tibet. Despite their differing roles in society, Coleman found that all of the dogs she encountered were loved, honored, and respected. All had a calm temperament and serene nature, mirroring that of their owners and guardians."

Her paintings capture this serene beauty of this majestic land, and are a true delight for dog lovers, art lovers and anyone who aspires to live a life of adventure and wonder.  Amazing!

  • William Secord On The Martha Stewart Show Today!

    William_secord_photo

William "Bill" Secord, the leading authority on 19th and 20th century dog paintings, visits The Martha Stewart Show today with some of his favorite examples from the genre.  Secord’s interest in dog art began in 1981 when he was named the director of the Dog Museum of America.  After that, he opened his own William Secord Gallery, which specializes in 19th and 20th century dog paintings, and also represents several contemporary artists, such as Christine Merrill

He is also the author of several books on the subject including his most recent work, A Breed Apart: The Art Collections of the American Club, which he kindly gives to every member of Martha’s audience today.
And, perhaps most importantly, he has a Dandie Dintmont Terrier named Rocky.

Say hi to Martha for us, Bill.  And thanks for taking dog art as seriously as we do at Dog Art Today!
