Roberta Smith of The New York Times sends out an S.O.S. to save the American Folk Art Museum:

Please.  Someone, everyone, do something to save the American Folk Art Museum from dissolution and dispersal.  Or at least slow down the process, so that all options can be thoroughly considered.  New York’s contemporary artists, and New York as a whole, need the creative energy of this stubborn, single-minded little institution, its outstanding exhibition program and its wondrous collection, an unparalleled mixture of classic American folk art and 20th-century outsider geniuses. 20th century American outsider artist and recluse, Henry Darger is one of the museum's stars with over 5,000 works.

Untitled (Dog) by Willem de Kooning, 1970

Holland Carter writes effusively about Willem de Kooning's long overdue retrospective at MoMA in The New York Times.   And MoMA has some fascinating interactive timelines about his work and insights about his methods and materials.  And, yes, de Kooning helped define abstract expressionism, but he was a dog artist too.

Cosima von Bonin’s Roger and Out is now showing at MOCA. Von Bonin, who was born in Kenya and works in Germany, is considered one of the most influential artists in today’s art scene. She’s known for her prolific work with a wide range of media including sculpture, photography, textiles, installation, performance and video. Dogs frequently appear in her art as she explores the idea of play, indoctrination, gender representations, identity and self-reflection.

This is her first solo museum exhibition in the US. I hope to get to MOCA and witness the work of such a creative mind, and of course check out the dogs. Show runs until Jan. 7, 2008. (source: Ann Goldstein, MOCA senior curator.)

  • Kenneth Treacy: Dogs in Motion

    Untitled

Kenneth Treacy’s artist statement reads as follows, “Abstract in essence, painting emerges from line and form, commencing with a gesture to skeletal structure and on to the meat of the matter. Orchestrating elements give rise to shape and definition, a record of my thoughts. Like prose, paint is used to explore and illuminate the internal dialogue.” I’d call his work highly-conceived energy and I absolutely love it! Visit his portfolio site to see more.

5.18.07 Update I’m a big fan of the kind gesture. Kenneth Treacy emailed me to let me know he’s named his formerly “Untitled” work, “Moira’s Dachshund.” So sweet. Thanks Kenneth. I noticed you have a new dog up too. “Bend” (below) is another awesome work. Keep them coming!
