140 minute pet portraits by Aimée Hoover

In 2009 artist Aimée Hoover was inspired by Twitter’s 140 character limit to attempt painting custom dog portraits in 140 minutes.   She also used the new social network platform to launch a contest and give away a portrait to one lucky winner.  Since then, she has completed nine 140 minute pieces and the results (above) are simply wonderful.  Today, she launches her 10th giveaway via her facebook page.   Go to Aimée’s blog for the contest rules, includeing tips to increase your chances to win, and submit a photo of your pet. Deadline to enter is Monday, March 14, 2011 at midnight PST.

    Good luck!

  • Crystal Bowersox’s Farmer’s Daughter: A Dog, A Rant, and A Typo

American Idol runner-up Crystal Bowersox's new CD comes out December 14, 2010. I think cover looks cool even though the pit bull is not her dog.  But I wonder if Crystal's recent Twitter rant about her record label has anything to do with the missing apostrophe in "Farmers Daughter" (above).   She wrote,  "Just frustrated with the politics of the industry. not just jive just disappointing how the industry has changed. every1s hands are tied."

If you go to Amazon an pre-order the CD, you'll see this grammatically correct image…

Crystal later tweeted an apology for dissing her label.  Read full story here.

  • Dog Story at Hyperbole and a Half

    Dog by Allie Brosh

Hey, does everybody except me know about artist Allie Brosh’s hilarious blog called Hyperbole and a Half?  Allie has over a million visitors each month and 14,120 followers on Twitter and I feel very late to the party.   I also feel like I want to scrap Dog Art Today and start over.  I want to be like Allie — irreverent, self-effacing, confident using words like insufflate and motherf#*kg in the same post.  Don’t you just hate (and love) when someone else’s work makes you feel this way?  Go there now and see what you think.  She just posted a story about testing her dog to see if she’s mentally challenged.  Truly made me LOL.

  • Elliott Erwitt: Dachsund Photo and Twitter Contest

    Elliott_erwitt_dachshund_sunbather

No words can express how much I love this newly released photo by Elliott Erwitt, one of the greatest photographers of the 20th and 21st century.  The fact that Erwitt has devoted some of his extraordinary talent to photographing dogs, makes him, IMO, the greatest dog photographer ever.

Readers of this blog know I have featured him before and raved about him often.  But there has been a limited amount of his images available on the Web.  That has changed.  This week, German publishing house teNeues announced the launch of a new Elliot Erwitt Website featuring never before seen exclusive Erwitt photographs and a chance to interact with the iconic photographer himself via Twitter.  Here’s how it works; visit the website and choose a photo.  Click on the photo to take you to Twitter where you write a caption for the image.  Then, Elliot Erwitt will choose his favorite and the winner will receive a copy of one of his books.

I am not surprised that Erwitt has embraced social networking.  His photographs are exceptional because he looks at life with fresh eyes every time he takes a shot.  Experimenting with  new technology and paths of promotion is an extension of that openness, that inquisitive nature.  And it is yet another aspect of what makes him the best.

P.S. teNeues promises to release more Elliott Erwitt dog photographs as the Website evolves.  I will keep you posted.

  • Does Your Dog Twitter?

    Twitter-dog
    Ribsy the Dog Twitterer

If you’re not on Twitter, you have probably heard about it.  It’s the latest social networking site that’s a cross between Facebook and instant messaging.   I signed up months ago, couldn’t figure it out, and signed off.  Now, with it bubbling up in the news and on friends’ blogs, I am better understanding it and beginning to enjoy it.

One of the sites that helped me make sense of Twitter is Darren Rowse’s TwiTip.  Today there is a guest post from Ribsy, a Whippet who Twitters, How to Be a Good Dog on Twitter in 8 Easy Steps.   The steps are all species-neutral so humans can easily follow them too.   Ribsy also coins a new phrase for what dogs do on Twitter, that would be “twark.”  Clever.

Over at The New York Times, David Pogue finally embraces Twitter in his Personal Tech column.  He helped alleviate my frustration with the site by letting me know that I can disregard all the Twitter rules I find that keep contradicting each other.  He has rules too, but his last one is, “Use Twitter the way you want to. Don’t let anyone tell you you’re doing it wrong.”

Then, once you get your Twitter on, stop by Rebecca Collins’s Art Dog Blog for some tutorials on how to design your Twitter background page.   Thanks, Rebecca!

Let me know if you have any good advice for new Twitterers and don’t forget to follow me on Twitter.
