  • Danngerous Dog Toy: Rough & Rugged by Four Paws

    Img_2530

Photographer and dog lover, Sabrina Helas, posted a story today about a dog named Chai who had to have his tongue amputated when it got caught by a vacuum seal inside this chew toy, Rough & Rugged by Four Paws.

    This is the culprit:

    Information:

Manufactured by Four Paws Inc. It is the pimple ball with bell (Item #20227-001, UPC Code 0 4566320227 9)

Sweet Chai is on the mend

Chai is recovering.  But it is so horrific.  Chai's owner has started a blog called The Chai Story to raise awareness about this dangerous toy.  It seems Chai is not the only dog to have suffered at the hands of this poor design that can create a vacuum seal on the dog's tongue.  Another dog, Coley, died after such a vacuum occurred and he succumbed to his wounds, and this was back in 2005.

Coley's owner wrote countless letters asking for Four Paws to change the design, but was assured this was just a freak accident.  Now, he is devastated that this has happened again to another dog.

Please forward this to all the dog owners in your life.

9.10.08 Update:  Four Paws has halted shipment of the Rough & Rugged ball but have not recalled it.  Now, it seems there are at least 13 dogs who have suffered injury from this poorly designed toy.  Via Cup of Dog.

  • Yoshitomo Nara Limited Edition Pup King at Baltic

    Yoshitomo_nara_pup_king_7

The Yoshitomo Nara + graph A-Z Project at Baltic in the northern England town of Gateshead sounds like an intriguing experience.  The renowned Japanese pop artist worked with the Osaka-based design company to create 26 houses, one for each street named for the alphabet, aiming to explore “the relationship between the individual, the space they inhabit and objects within their surroundings.”

While his iconic little girl drawings appear dominant, Pup King, his equally well-known dog, makes appearances too.

Can you find the single Pup King in this pile of plushies?    Click on image for larger view.

  • Jerry The Dachshund’s Mechanical Ball Throwing Machine

This mechanical dog toy took two years to build.  Jerry looks like he could play with it forever!

Discovered on dog photographer, Grace Chon’s, Shine Pet Photos Blog.   More about Grace’s awesome photos in a future post.  Today it’s all about Jerry and this mechanical work of art.

P.S. Although the machine looks a little dangerous for little fingers and paws, the inventor equipped it with many safety features including IR proximity sensors.  Read more about it at YouTube where Jerry has been viewed 1,094,952 times since the end of January.

  • Snoop & Sniff Dog Toy

    Snoop_sniff_dog_toy

Whoa…remember this darling dog toy from your childhood? No, you don’t have to bid on a musty old one from somebody’s attic on Ebay. Fisher-Price has recently reissued this classic hound first introduced in 1930. Now you can show your kids what a *real* toy looks like. It’s also the perfect dog for an allergen-free home.

Available online for $37 from one of my favorite LA stores, Zipper.

  • Lisa Oxley: 21st Century-Old Master

    Lou
    Lou

Los Angeles based artist Lisa Oxley’s pet portraits are inspired by the 18th and 19th century tradition of dog paintings. “Old master portraits of saints, mystics, and the aristrocracy” are also points of reference. One look at her breathtaking and truly original work and one suspects she will be a guiding light for artists to come. These are true masterpieces.
