The DANK Inaugural, the group show inspired by the theme of "water" that Tyler Foote and I have been working on, opens this Friday, July 11 in Nevada City, California, 5 – 9 pm. DANK is an artists’ collective in Nevada City, California. It was founded in 2013 by ten artists interested in post-Great Recession social issues, the rural ideal, and an anti-urban aesthetic grounded in the legacy of the California Gold Rush.

The name DANK comes from the wet wood smell that permeates Nevada City, a town situated on the banks of Deer Creek. It’s also a nod to one of the area’s premier exports, cannabis. And it’s an acronym for Do Art Now Kids.

Members include: Celine Adrianna Negrete, Roseanne Burke, Sheila Cameron, Kathy Frey, Cynthia Levesque, Moira McLaughlin, Joe Meade, Nancy Nelson, Dylan Sherwood McConnell, Reinette Senum.

Show runs until August 3, 2014.

Dog Art Today and Strathmore Unleashed!

I am thrilled to announce that the exhibition I have been working on as an advisor, Strathmore Unleashed!, is opening this weekend, April 28, 2012 at Strathmore, the fine arts and cultural center in Bethesda, MD.

My involvement with Strathmore Unleashed! began in February when curator Harriet Lesser contacted me looking for dog artists who depict "an alternative approach to our relationship with our dogs." She wanted work that expressed a "depth of feeling and intensity in a mostly non-verbal way." She also wanted to include my video tribute to 5,000 years of dog-centric artwork entitled "Dogs in Art."

"Yes," I told Harriet. "I would love to be involved."

Not only was this a meeting of the minds between Harriet and me, both artists who take dog art seriously, but it was also a tremendous opportunity for me to look back at the last five years of my blog Dog Art Today. I reviewed every single article, over 1200 posts, and thousands of artists. I was reminded of works I had forgotten and fell back in love with old favorites.

I gave Harriet a four-page document of artists to consider, and she did the outreach and coordination. When she sent me the list of her selections that included Jane O'Hara, Clair Hartmann, Anna Dibble, Kaththyn Freeman, David Corcoran, Marjorie Weiss, Heather LaHaise, Kent Ambler, I was so proud to be a part of this prestigious group. I was also excited that she chose to include my sister Sheila Cameron's work. And since my parents' dog, Minnie, and my sister Regan's dog, Logan, are both in my "Dogs in Art" video, Strathmore Unleashed! is truly a family affair.

Strathmore Unleashed! will also feature five doghouses, from futuristic polypod structures to scale models inspired by the Sydney Opera House, photographs by the iconic William Wegman, large scale installations by Dale Rogers, and a fiber sculpture by Ann Citron.

Most exciting is that for the opening reception on Thursday May 3, 2012 Strathmore Unleashed! will host a special Yappy Hour from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. for dog owners to bring their pets to the exhibition. It is free and open to the public.

Strathmore Unleashed! runs from this Friday April 28, 2012 to June 23, 2012. The exhibition also includes an art talk, a children's drawing session, and special tours.

Happy Birthday Darby!

For Darby's 17th birthday I wanted to make a short film of him peacefully sitting in his favorite spot. Like Andy Warhol's "Sleep," maybe I could get him napping and make a quiet, soulful tribute to my very old dog. This is how it turned out..

Sheila Cameron’s New Art Blog

My sister Sheila Cameron is one of the most creative people I know. You may remember her FREE KATIE empire from 2005. Since then, she's focused on her two greatest works, daughters Layla and Sabrina. But this month she decided she was ready to get back to her art and launched a new blog combining her passions. It's called Watching the Paint Dry: 365 Days of Motherhood, Art, and Clichés. She recently posted this darlng Yorkie painting, possibly inspired by her late and beloved little guy Danny, who never looked so fancy, but had the same sweet eyes. Stop by Sheila's blog and say hi.

Jon Stewart T-Shirts

My clever sister Sheila Cameron designed these "In Stewart We Trust" T-shirts. I like the ones for dogs, but she has styles for men, women, kids, and babies here. Thank God for Jon Stewart, the voice of reason during our "economic turmoil" or as The Daily Show calls it, "the clusterf@#k to the poorhouse."

Hang in there readers. I am trying to will dog art into the recession-proof category. Any thoughts?

Happy Birthday Sheila!

Sheila, my little sister turns 30-something today. Strange, I always picture her kind of like this in my mind’s eye — adorable and happy. Well, she hasn’t *really* changed that much!

I hope you have a wonderful day. I miss you since the move, but distance doesn’t make that big a difference in a friendship like ours.

Happy Birthday, Minnie!

Minnie the Magnificent, my mom and dad’s Papillon Chihuahua mix, turns eight today. I heard they’re all going out for ice cream to celebrate. (Yes, Minnie gets her own cup.) Have fun!

Good-bye Dan, The Littlest Emperor

Danny was my sister Sheila's dog. Last night she said good-bye to him. He was 12 and he was sick. It was devastating. Danny was a character. Barely 4 pounds, he was absolutely adorable. Children were crazy about him — like a teddy bear come to life. But he was deceivingly powerful. Really, somehow he managed to alpha-dog his entire family. It was stunning and hilarious. Here is the photo Sheila sent an online suitor named Greg. Obviously Greg fell in love with them both and married her and adopted him. They came to have a special bond. (Sheila and Greg did too.)

Once, we made Danny an emperor's costume for a video project I was making. We thought he would be fussy wearing a fur-lined cape and a golden laurel crown. He loved it! Didn't want to take it off, and for years he wore it on his walks. He was very popular with the West Hollywood boys on Santa Monica Blvd. They admired his style.

Danny, you weren't always the easiest dog, but you brought great joy to many people. And the family you helped create by being so cute in that single photo sent to a stranger is your legacy. Our hearts are heavy that you're gone. Rest in peace, Little Guy.
