  • Verheggen’s Dog Art Sculpture Sinks — Already!

    Ap_verheggen

Ap Verheggen and his team.  Photo by Dr. Wilfred E. Richard

Remember at the end of March when I featured the story about Dutch artist Ap Verheggen and the abstract Inuit dog sled sculpture he placed on an iceberg near Western Greenland’s Uummannaq Island?  The goal was to draw attention to global warming by tracking the sculpture’s drift and eventual submersion as the iceberg melted.  On June 2, the artist reported something had happened to the GPS.  They no longer had a signal from the iceberg and wondered on their blog what happened, a technical glitch with the device?
THEY COULD NOT BELIEVE THAT THE ICEBERG HAD MELTED!  BUT IT WAS GONE IN A MATTER OF WEEKS!!!

  • Robert Bradford’s Toy Dogs

    Robert_bradford_1

One day Cornwall-based artist Robert Bradford looked at his children’s box of outgrown toys and noticed the “random collection of colors, shapes, and forms they made.”  He thought, “If I could find a way of putting them together to constitute a
larger form they would have great potential as larger scale sculpture.”

Potential indeed.  I think his toy dog sculptures are fantastic!  If you’re in London, you can view the soft sculpture one (5th from the top) at the Battersea Affordable Art Fair  from March 12 – 15, 2009.  See more of Bradford’s works at his website

If you’re an artist, your assignment today is to look at the toy chest, the junk drawer, or your cleaning supplies with new eyes.  Maybe you’ll find a work of art.

P.S.  Robert just sent me a note to let me know he does commissions of people’s dogs.  Contact him at his website if you’re interested.  He also sent this new photo of his soft sculpture dog.  Love it!

  • Picasso & Lump: The Art

Inspired by the awesome LaHaise original of Darby I received from Heather yesterday, I am featuring some of my all-time favorite artworks by Picasso of his beloved Dachshund named Lump.

First there is this sweet paper bunny, a sculpture that would be worth millions today, Picasso made as a toy for his little muse…

    Picasso_lump_photo_5

Look at this wonderful plate he made with Lump on it.  I would love to know if this was Lump’s doggie dish…

Then, Picasso was inspired by what many consider the greatest painting in the Western world, Spanish court painter Diego Velázquez’s Las Meninas (The Maids of Honor, 1656).

    Velazquez-las-meninas

Picasso painted over 40 studies of this breathtakingly complex work.  Several include Lump…

All photos © David Douglas Duncan who was Lump’s original owner before the savvy pup charmed his way into Pablo Picasso’s life.  Classic Dachshund!

  • Horse Art Today

Solar powered kinetic paper horse sculpture by James G. Watt.  Inspired by Eadweard Muybridge’s early motion photography and artist Theo Jansen.  This little film is so beautiful, I had to share.

Click here to order a kit to build your own solar powered kinetic paper horse.  I wonder if Watt has any dogs in the works?  A running Greyhound would be brilliant.

Music: "Sawdust & Diamonds" by Joanna Newsom…Love it!

  • German Shepherd Gifts

German Shepherds are the 3rd most popular dog breed in the U.S. This surprises me since I don’t know anyone who owns a German Shepherd (like how it’s all about me). But I trust the American Kennel Club’s statistics. And I trust that the German Shepherd owners are out there looking for Christmas gifts. So here are my picks:

    German_shepherd_painting

Anne & Florent oil painting by Dog Art Today favorite Rachelle Oatman. Available through Dog Art Dealer Jaynie Milligan Spector. Obviously a mixed marriage.

    German_shepherd_ornament
Stunning White German Shepherd ornament. Made of porcelain, it comes with a red ribbon for tree hanging. From the White German Shepherd Store.

    Germanshepherdabsolute

German Shepherd wired sculpture from Green Piece Wire Art. Also available as a topiary, in case you want a German Shepherd to simply stay in your yard and look pretty.

    German_shepherd_t_shirt

A German Shepherd herds his flock of sheep on this darling long sleeved t-shirt. Available in lots of great sizes and styles from Karen Hocker Studios.

    Monks_new_skete

Experts say not to give a puppy as a Christmas gift. But it’s soooo fun! If you do it this year, be sure to include the “Bible” of dog training, The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete, who have been breeding German Shepherds for over 20 years. I used this book to train and understand (the Monks are big on understanding your dog, which I love) my Dachshund. I wonder if that’s why he thinks he’s a big dog?

    German_shepherd_fleece

Another great gift for a new puppy owner, a German Shepherd Men’s Fleece. You’ll need it to keep warm while you’re outside trying to understand why your dog won’t do her business. You asked nicely.

    German_shepher_custom

Hand carved German Shepherd portrait by Michael John dePierro. Visit his Parts of a Larger World to custom order one of his sculptures of your pet. He does people too.
