Verheggen’s Dog Art Sculpture Sinks — Already!

Remember at the end of March when I featured the story about Dutch artist Ap Verheggen and the abstract Inuit dog sled sculpture he placed on an iceberg near Western Greenland’s Uummannaq Island? The goal was to draw attention to global warming by tracking the sculpture’s drift and eventual submersion as the iceberg melted. On June 2, the artist reported something had happened to the GPS. They no longer had a signal from the iceberg and wondered on their blog what happened, a technical glitch with the device?
THEY COULD NOT BELIEVE THAT THE ICEBERG HAD MELTED! BUT IT WAS GONE IN A MATTER OF WEEKS!!!

Robert Bradford’s Toy Dogs

One day Cornwall-based artist Robert Bradford looked at his children’s box of outgrown toys and noticed the “random collection of colors, shapes, and forms they made.” He thought, “If I could find a way of putting them together to constitute a
larger form they would have great potential as larger scale sculpture.”

Potential indeed. I think his toy dog sculptures are fantastic! If you’re in London, you can view the soft sculpture one (5th from the top) at the Battersea Affordable Art Fair from March 12 – 15, 2009. See more of Bradford’s works at his website.

If you’re an artist, your assignment today is to look at the toy chest, the junk drawer, or your cleaning supplies with new eyes. Maybe you’ll find a work of art.

Picasso & Lump: The Art

Inspired by the awesome LaHaise original of Darby I received from Heather yesterday, I am featuring some of my all-time favorite artworks by Picasso of his beloved Dachshund named Lump.

First there is this sweet paper bunny, a sculpture that would be worth millions today, Picasso made as a toy for his little muse…

Look at this wonderful plate he made with Lump on it. I would love to know if this was Lump’s doggie dish…

Then, Picasso was inspired by what many consider the greatest painting in the Western world, Spanish court painter Diego Velázquez’s Las Meninas (The Maids of Honor, 1656).

Picasso painted over 40 studies of this breathtakingly complex work. Several include Lump…

Ted Benvenuti’s Dachshunds

São Paulo artist Ted Benvenuti has added a new sleek breed to his sustainable dog bench line, the Dachshund, made from certifiably reforested Brazilian bentwood and carpentry shop leftovers. Sit!

Horse Art Today

German Shepherd Gifts

German Shepherds are the 3rd most popular dog breed in the U.S. This surprises me since I don’t know anyone who owns a German Shepherd (like how it’s all about me). But I trust the American Kennel Club’s statistics. And I trust that the German Shepherd owners are out there looking for Christmas gifts. So here are my picks:

Experts say not to give a puppy as a Christmas gift. But it’s soooo fun! If you do it this year, be sure to include the “Bible” of dog training, The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete, who have been breeding German Shepherds for over 20 years. I used this book to train and understand (the Monks are big on understanding your dog, which I love) my Dachshund. I wonder if that’s why he thinks he’s a big dog?

Another great gift for a new puppy owner, a German Shepherd Men’s Fleece. You’ll need it to keep warm while you’re outside trying to understand why your dog won’t do her business. You asked nicely.
