Coiffure for Harper’s Bazaar by Lillian Bassman, c. 1954

Art director and self-taught fashion and fine-art photographer Lillian Bassman died on Monday, February 13, 2012.   She was 94.

    The New York Times obituary.

    Slideshow of her works.

Her photographs have been published in Lillian Bassman (1997) and Lillian Bassman: Women (2009).  A new book, Lillian Bassman: Lingerie, will be published on April 1, 2012.

If you are an artist or photographer, don’t destroy your work or negatives.  Bassman did, and later rediscovered interest in the work that survived.  You don’t have to like your early work.  But keep it.

  • Meet Henry!

    Henry

    Henry

After so many sad posts last week, I am so happy to introduce you to Sabrina Helas’s  new Golden Retriever puppy named Henry.  You will recall that Sabrina lost her dog Kramer last month to cancer.  One of her clients had a litter of puppies and offered her one.  As she said, “How could I refuse?”  Now, there are still tears for Kramer, but tempered with laughter with Henry, who is Sabrina’s first puppy.

My two pieces of advice are 1.) go to puppy school when he’s old enough.  It’s a blast and it will give you your sanity back to be able to communicate with him.  And 2.) take lots of photos and then take some more.  He will grow right before your eyes!

  • The Obama Dog Blog: My New Blog on CNN!

So, I have been moonlighting.  I started a new blog called The Obama Dog Blog as a place for all the First Puppy stories I came across that were not arty enough for Dog Art Today.  Then, this morning I got an email from Gaz the Cartoonist, whom I featured on my new blog, saying that we had been on CNN last night.   Needless to say I am quite thrilled, but please know that this in now way diminishes my passion for my first love (and first blog Dog Art Today).  I guess this is what having two dogs (or children) must feel like.

Anyway, if you come across any fun, funny or creative Obama dog news please email me.  Any and all tips are greatly appreciated.

"Sasha and Malia … I love you both more than you can imagine. And you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the new White House." — President-elect Barack Obama, November 4, 2008.

Change has come to America. I am so proud. Congratulations to the Obama family. We can't wait to meet the first dog.

    7:01 am update:
Thanks to my cousin, Clair, for letting me know that the Bidens are also getting a dog.  As reported by Reuters:

    Obama’s running mate, Joe Biden,
is also getting in on the act. He told reporters traveling with him
earlier that his wife had promised him a “big dog” if he got elected.

Jill Biden had taped pictures of different dogs on the back of the
seat in front of him on his campaign plane to inspire the candidate as
he criss-crossed the country in the final sprint to election day.

“Jill had said the only way you are getting a dog is if you are
president … we didn’t think about vice president,” said Biden. “She
said at least if you live in the White House you are home.”

He dropped out of the presidential race but when Obama asked him to
join the ticket, his wife Jill said if he did so she would let him have
    the dog he wanted.

Read Clair's beautiful post about last night here.

7:16 am update:  The Obamas join a long tradition of first families with dogs.  Here is an excellent website dedicated to American Presidents and their dogs.  Did you know George Washington had 10 hounds; Mopsey,
Taster, Cloe, Tipler, Forester, Captain, Lady Rover, Vulcan, Sweetlips and
    Searcher. (Sweetlips!  Hilarious!)
