  • The Enlightened Hound Canine Wisdom Posters by Debbie Kendall

    Enlightened-Hound-1

    Canine Wisdom Poster No. 1

Printmaker, Debbie Kendall of The Enlightened Hound lives in Buckinghamshire, England and works in her attic studio overlooking the treetops. There, with her muse, a tenderhearted Portuguese Water Dog named Figo, she carves and prints her series of Canine Wisdom posters inspired by 19th century American typography and the secrets dogs have about living happy lives.

I think these prints so charming and cheerful.  And, because they are hand-crafted, signed, and numbered each one has its own identity, it's own enlightened energy.

Debbie's series of canine words of wisdom are also available as greeting cards and would be lovely to send out for the holidays, joyful reminders about what's important when it's easy to lose the scent.

  • Albrecht Dürer’s Saint Eustace Sells for $216,132

Saint Eustace by Albrecht Dürer, 1501

Last night in London at Christie’s Old Masters Print Sale this Albrecht Dürer engraving of Saint Eustace was estimated to sell for $122,160 – $183,240 (£80,000 – £120,000).  It exceeded expectations and sold for $216,132 (£145,250).

I love the beautifully rendered Greyhounds and the thin veneer of Christianity applied to this pagan scene — Christ appearing as a stag.

Christie’s lot notes provide the the full story of Saint Eustace, the patron saint of hunters, and insight into the 16th century battle of sculpture vs. paintings.  As far as Greyhounds goes, I think Dürer wins this round.

This, largest of all Dürer’s engravings, has always been considered one of his finest. According to the legend Placidus, a general under Emperor Trajan, was out hunting one day when Christ appeared to him in the shape of a white stag which had a radiant crucifix between its antlers. This vision prompted his conversion to Christianity, and he was baptised Eustace. As the patron saint of hunters and one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers he was one of the most popular saints of the 15th and 16th Centuries.

As an artist for whom the study of nature was paramount, the subject of the stag hunt in the forest offered Dürer an opportunity to display his consummate skill in the representation of animals, plants and landscape. Since Leonardo’s writings on the subject – the so-called Paragone – the question of the supremacy of the different artistic media was one of the great disputes in the theory of art and was reiterated in various tracts throughout the 16th Century. One argument in favour of sculpture was that it allowed the artist to show a figure three-dimensionally and from different angles at the same time. By demonstrating that this could also be done in two dimensions painters tried to invalidate this argument.

One of the most admired and best-loved elements in Dürer’s printmaking are the greyhounds in the foreground of the present composition, and commentators cited them as proof of the parity of painting and sculpture, such was the effectiveness with which they were described.

    A Perfect Friend

Artist Matthew Rose writes from Paris that he is offering this artist proof of A Perfect Friend to one lucky collector for 250 Euros ($342.25).  The artist proof is the first try of the limited edition series that sell for $750 each.   It is signed, dated ,and marked with A/P instead of a series' number.   Size 56 x 76 cm  (22' x 30").

Of the thousands of pieces of dog art I feature on my site, A Perfect Friend, might actually be my favorite.  Even as I write this, I can't fully explain why.  I just know that if I do mental bracket elimination in my head, I am pretty sure it would win.  (Note to self, look into online bracket widget for 2009).

If I had to name the elements I respond to in this piece, the list would go something like this: it's black and white, graphic, humorous, dada-esque, somehow poignant,  and minimal.  It combines everything I love: dogs, art history, contemporary art, 20th century art, 17th century art, and collage.  Basically it's a visual summation of what I write about every day.  Perfect!

To order the artist print or a limited edition piece,  contact Matthew Rose.   Also, stop by his blog for links to his work, information about his bilingual Parisian printing business, and more holiday gift ideas.
