    Steeler Poodle by Ren Netherland

The Steelers first regular season game is tonight on NBC at 8:30 EST.  Oh yeah, they're playing the Titans.  Go Steelers!

(BTW, I am really a Browns fan, but I root for the Steelers when they are not playing each other.  My parents live in Pittsburgh, and let's face it how much heartbreak can a person take?)

  • 1850 Poodle Daguerreotype

    Vintage_poodle_photograph

Poodle with Bow on Table by Anonymous American Photographer, 1850

This sweet Poodle daguerreotype is up for auction at Sotheby’s New York on Monday March 30, 2009.  The catalogue’s  condition report highlights its “excellent condition” and points out that “this daguerreotype is astonishing for the clarity of its rendering of a
difficult subject. Looked at under magnification, this image shows a
wealth of detail in the dog’s face and in the texture of its fur.”

What I find astonishing is that its one of the earliest dog photographs I have ever seen.  And, it is yet another indication that our deep love of our pets is nothing new.  Not only does the photographer spend time, money, and materials in a complicated and time consuming process to memorialize the dog, someone also took the time to give her jaunty bow.  Wonderful!

Estimate is $5,000 – $7,000.  Visit Sotheby’s for more information.

Hat tip to my friend Kevin Hannigan who sent me this story via Andrew Sullivan’s blog.

  • Dog Art Today Redesign or Why it Pays to Read Directions

    Poodle_reading_book

I've been feeling a little cramped lately and very frustrated.  I really wanted to change my blog.  I'd love a more minimalist feel.  And space.  Room for the art to just speak for itself.  But how much will that cost?  Is it worth it right now to have the down time right before the holidays?   If someone goes under my hood, will that mess up all the lovely automated features that Typepad provides?

Well, guess what, this redesign was as simple and quick as clicking a button.  O.MG.  I couldn't believe it.  Like Dorothy's ruby slippers, my new, spacious, simple, blog was there the whole time!

OK, it's not exactly what I want.  I would make tweaks with the font, perhaps, and upload a new and improved logo.  I miss the orange.  But for now, I am very happy.

So, if you happen to be a blogger like me, who tries to avoid reading directions at all costs.  Know that on Typepad, at least, you have the option to change your blog with a single click.   For step by step instructions click here.

    Scottie mosaic for Rebecca Collins.

I went a little Dachshund crazy yesterday.  So today I've selected some breeds of some of my readers from the groovy KG Studios in Oakland.  This band of four artists working out of a basement corner consists of KG and Peter Greenstein, Allan Dodge and Dave Hill, Sr.  They specialize in mosaics, wire work, and Kaleponi Ukuleles.

I confess I have never worked in any of these media, but I know enough to know that making intricate curves out of squares is a true art.  And I am duly impressed.  Wouldn't you love one of these wonderful works for the bottom of your pool?

  • Retro Modern Cmielow Dogs

When premier shelter blogger Grace Bonney picks a dog, I take notice. Grace, who’s gorgeous Design * Sponge sets a standard for us all, recently visited Eden & Eden in SF, a store she describes as “oozing a genuine love of beautiful objects.” And after three days of indecision, she decided to purchase one item — a Cmielow Fox Terrier.

Cmielow figurines at Eden & Eden

The Polish town of Cmielow has porcelain factories that date back to 1790. In the late 50’s and early 60’s renowned artists such as Lubomiren Tomaszewski, Hanna Orthwein, Henryk Jedrasiak, Mieczyslaw Naruszewicz designed modern figurines that were influenced by the works of Picasso and Henry Moore. These highly sought after pieces soon became harder and harder to find as the factory’s production declined and eventually stopped.

Now, new owners have recovered the original molds (from the basement) and are making these wonderful works of art again. Each one is crafted by hand, signed, and shipped with a certificate of authenticity. England’s Blue Poppy Art is one of the top wholesalers of Cmielow. They issue 2 limited editions each year, a catalogue upon request, and they are happy to sell retail if you contact them directly.

Grace Kelly with her Poodle Oliver

Sotheby's New York opens a Grace, Princess of Monaco Exhibition on October 15 that will feature some of her favorite dresses, jewelry and personal belongings, as well as photos, films and documents that capture the essence of her life.

I don't know if the following images will be included, so I decided to create my own Grace Kelly tribute featuring her beloved dogs.

Here is a video of Grace, her family and her wedding party on the Constitution. There are some darling shots of her and Oliver at the end.

I wanted to include this ITN Souce video (click on clip #6), but it cost $20 a second to embed it. View it for free on their site. Watch closely at the end and you'll see Grace Kelly walking down the gangway to meet her prince and she's carrying her Poodle. Prince Rainier kindly picks up the leash she is dragging behind her and escorts her to the car. It's the only time I've ever seen Grace Kelly with a single thing out of place and I think it makes her so endearing — holding on to her dog for security as she faces her new life — and then she ominously disappears into the fortress-like castle.

And finally, for your listening pleasure, my new music crush, Mika, singing "Grace Kelly." Enjoy!

If you'd like to view Mika on YouTube on a larger screen and get the full effect click here. P.S. I've combed several trivia sites and couldn't find the name of Grace Kelly's Weimaraner. I did discover it was a wedding gift. If anyone knows its name and whom it was from, let me know.

10.19.07 Update: As if you needed another reason to love Grace Kelly, Andrew of GraceKellyOnline.com sent me this article by the New York Daily News' Gina Salamone. It includes this photo of Kelly with her Great Dane.
