  • Pawsterpieces: Go For The Gold!

    Pawsterpiece_1 wp_IMG

The winner of the Westminster Dog Show gets a lovely silver bowl.  I know it’s tradition, but don’t our dogs deserve gold?  Amy and Geoff Mitchell think so.

The L.A. couple behind a new pet portrait company called Pawsterpieces has come up with a gorgeous method of presenting your favorite pet photo on a gold leaf background.  This exclusive process imbues each portrait with a shimmering timeless quality that makes it the perfect keepsake for you or gift for the pet lover in your life.  Because, face it, everyone thinks their pet is the best in the world.  And the best in the world deserves nothing less than gold.  Ask anyone on the way to Beijing.

Amy has generously offered all Dog Art Today readers a 20% discount on any of their products if you mention you read about them here.  They have several sweet options (below).  Also, they can work with any photo you send them, but are happy to include a photo shoot your dog, cat, lizard, bird or horse to start the Pawsterpiece process.

And finally, don’t be afraid of investing in gold, their prices are very reasonable.

  • Seth Casteel’s Dogs of Summer

    Dog_playing_1

Yay!  Summer officially starts today and I have some amazing action pet portraits to usher in the dog days of 2008.  Seth Casteel is a Los Angeles-based pet photographer who specializes in documentary-style photography and capturing the spontaneity of dogs in their own surroundings.

I love his crisp style and his ability to get the elegant lines of dogs in motion as well as their wonderful split-second, utterly focused expressions.  Clearly, Seth’s background as a wildlife photographer in the Australian Outback permeates his work today in the jungles of L.A.  He also is a passionate advocate for shelter dogs, giving his time to photograph them so they look their best for potential forever companions.  Wonderful work Seth, on every level.

  • Dogs in Art: A New Film by Moira McLaughlin

Several months in the making, my new film Dogs in Art was a true labor of love.  It was such a pleasure working so closely with all these spectacular pet portraits and charting the history of dogs in art over 5,000 years. The art and the artists were, and still are, endlessly inspiring. Hope you enjoy it!

View Dogs in Art on a "wide screen" at YouTube.

See a list of all the art (full images) and links to the artists here.

As a favor, if you'd like to leave a comment, please click on this YouTube link and leave it there. I'm moving up the charts as "Most Discussed" video in the Pets & Animals category and feeling very competitive.

P.S. Adding me to your Favorites on YouTube is also greatly appreciated. Thank you : )

P.P.S. Music is Parlez-Moi D'Amour by CharlElie Couture from The Moderns soundtrack by Mark Isham.  I couldn't find it on iTunes but you can get the CD here.

P.P.S.  In case you haven't seen it, this film was inspired by Philip Scott Johnson's masterful "Women in Art" video blockbuster of last year.  Click here to see it.

  • Grace Chon Launches Woof Magazine…Sort Of

    Grace_chon_woof

Look what L.A. pet photographer, Grace Chon just created for her clients.  Covers of Woof Magazine so your superstar dog can have the press exposure he of she deserves.  They look so authentic, no one needs to know that, like almost everything in this town, it’s just a façade.  Very Hollywood and very clever!

Yesterday, dog blog friends, Ann B. at the The Daily Dachshund and Linda O’Neill of Abby Creek Art both mentioned the AP’s article about Black Dog Syndrome – the sad fact that black dogs make up the highest percentage of dogs put to sleep in animal shelters because people have the perception that they are unfriendly.  The article cites several reasons for this phenomenon including the misperception that all black dogs are aggressive, that white hairs in their muzzles can make them look elderly, that they are hard to see against the shadows of their cages, and that they are difficult to photograph, especially their dark eyes.

This reminded me of an amazing L.A. pet photographer I recently discovered named Grace Chon.  I love Grace’s clean, modern style and her playful approach to photo shoots.  She actually comes bearing treats and toys.  But what I truly admire about Grace is her dedication to shelter dogs and the way she uses her talent to help them, especially black dogs, find forever homes.

Grace spends her spare time volunteering for an animal rescue group called The Paw’d Squad.  She takes beautiful photographs of the shelter dogs for their website in order help capture the essence of the dogs and help draw in people looking to adopt.  Through what she affectionately calls her Extreme Dog Makeovers, she can make a big difference in whether or not a dog finds a home.  For example, here is a snapshot of a Rottweiler named Fannie Mae taken by The Paw’d Squad:

    Fannie Mae "Before"

    And here is Grace’s photo:

    Grace_chon_rottweiler_2

Fannie Mae "After" really captures her happy, playful, silly nature.  And by the way she’s still in need of a home if you know anyone.

And she doesn’t give up.  Sometimes she will go back month after month taking photos of the same dog to try to get the exact right image that will attract a prospective doggie parent.  Her results have  been remarkable and have had a profound impact on helping The Paw’d Squad find homes for dogs that seemed completely unwanted, before Grace did her magic.  For example can you believe this little guy had trouble finding a home?

Not after Grace gave him a photography makeover:

Also, as an owner of two black rescue dogs, Maeby, a former Mexican street dog, and Zoey, a pup born in the gutter of Taiwan whom she rescued through an international organization called ART, she is an advocate of adopting and promoting the joy of owning black dogs.

It’s been a tough week looking at the brutality of puppy mills on Oprah, searching for ways to raise money for the ASPCA, but when you see the impact that one person can make on the lives of so many dogs, it’s truly inspiring.  It’s an honor, Grace, to feature you and your beautiful black dogs on Dog Art Today.  Thanks for all your hard work on behalf of these sweet creatures just looking for a place to call home.

  • Brava Firenze! Dogs Allowed (almost) Everywhere Now!

    Bassano_two_dogs

Two Dogs by Jacopo Bassano, 1517-1592, Uffizi Gallery

Pack your bags, Darby.  We’re going to Florence.  Well, actually, we’ll wait until June when a new law goes into effect that allows owners to take their dogs with them into art galleries, theaters, restaurants, cinemas, post offices, museums and beaches.  In fact, the only place, dogs (and all pets) will be banned from is The Teatro del Maggio Musicale, the Florence opera house.

The law, passed in order to "break down barriers that separate Man from his best friends," accomplishes what to me seemed impossible; it makes Florence, one of the most magical cities in the world, that much more spectacular!

Here are a few dog art works that I thought Darby might enjoy on his Grand Tour.  I also know where to get the best four-cheese pizza and pistachio gelato he will go nuts for.

  • Ann Hamilton’s Vantage Point

    Tiny_off_center

Reading David Denby’s New Yorker review of the movie "Vantage Point"  made me think about Ann Hamilton’s Photography .  Denby calls the thriller, told "Rashomon"-style, from different points of view, "something remarkable" for its capacity to capture the "sheer flux of life."  The same, I thought could be said about Hamilton’s work with dogs.  It is remarkable!

I was going to feature several of her brilliant photographs of different dogs here.  But after losing my mind trying to pick favorites from a pack of perfection, I, too, decided to go "Rashomon" today and chose to show you Tiny from all of Hamilton’s vantage points.

When Darby my Dachshund was diagnosed with cancer last fall, the vet told me that a successful surgery to remove his kidney would give him at least another year.  After that, all I heard was white noise.  Only another year with my dog!

When he recovered (he’s doing great now), I started taking dozens of photographs of him.  I followed him around with my camera snapping shots of every cute expression and pose.  But I always seemed to miss just the right moment.  I felt the impossibility of capturing the essence of my beloved dog.  I felt what Denby describes as "the longing to perceive the secret and idiosyncratic pattern within chaos, the singular currents running through the tumultuous sea."  I resigned myself to using my memory instead, living in the moment of being with my dog.

Upon seeing Hamilton’s work, I’m inspired again.  Looking at the different faces of Tiny, I see that it is possible for someone with great talent and a keen eye to perceive the "idiosyncratic chaos" that is a dog and capture it on film.

Usually, when I meet people who’ve just adopted a new puppy, I tell them to take lots of pictures.  Now, I think I will just say, call Ann Hamilton.

  • Dog Beds Designed to Delight

My Dog Art Décor Section has been a little sparse, and the dog art pillows were a big hit. So today is devoted to dog beds a designer (or artist) would love. Look at beautiful items I found at cribcandy:

    The Round Shaker Pet Bed
I’m from Shaker Heights, so this struck a chord with me. So simple and so sweet. From Shaker Workshops.

    The Lucite Mija Bed
If Austin Powers had a dog, this would be his bed. The Mija comes in five colors, with six cushion color choices. Totally groovy! From WowBow of London.

    The Elly Bed
This is my favorite. It comes in wenge or zebrawood. Very Zen. From Bark Deco.

  • Vinum Cellars’s Pets 2005

    Petslabel

In vintner jargon Pets is short for Petite Sirah. So when it came time name this vintage, Vinum Cellars’s owners Chris Condos and Richard Bruno dedicated it to their friend, grape grower Ken Wilson and his dog Tanker. And they christened it Pets.

I love the bold red and black design of this label. It has the feel of a classic Italian movie poster. The wine’s description is wonderful too…”Dark colored, long legged and bold, we feel this wine has the potential of becoming your best friend.” Just like your favorite pet.

Order a bottle ($14.00) and toast the dog days of summer. (A portion of the profits from this wine’s sales are donated to the San Francisco SPCA).
