The show, Constance Coleman's Tibetan Journey; The Dogs and Animals of Tibet, opens tomorrow October 16, 2008 at the William Secord Gallery in NYC.  Coleman has been a prominent pet portrait artist for 30 years.  After turning eighty and traveling to Tibet, she was so inspired, she returned to paint the animals in the Kham region.  There, Colman…

"…found many dogs of mixed Tibetan breeds to paint. Some of the dogs were kept as pets, some were guard dogs or shop dogs, and some were the cherished temple dogs. These temple dogs are believed to be the reincarnation of monks who have not yet reached Nirvana, and are therefore very precious to the people of Tibet. Despite their differing roles in society, Coleman found that all of the dogs she encountered were loved, honored, and respected. All had a calm temperament and serene nature, mirroring that of their owners and guardians."

Her paintings capture this serene beauty of this majestic land, and are a true delight for dog lovers, art lovers and anyone who aspires to live a life of adventure and wonder.  Amazing!

  • Tim Racer and His Carousel Dogs

San Francisco artist Tim Racer began his career in the 2D world of advertising and editorial assignments. As a former tree trimmer, he was drawn to more hands on work, which he found assisting master carousel painter Pam Hessey.

Today, he happily spends his time restoring landmark carousels throughout the country and custom carving the magnificent dogs seen here.

He also is a passionate advocate for Pit Bulls, co-founding the Bay Area Doglovers Responsible About Pit Bulls, or BAD RAP. I’m guessing Sally, Racer’s own Pit Bull and model, is one of the group’s best ambassadors…

  • Huang Yong Ping’s Amerigo Vespucci Dog Sculpture

    Huangyongping

Artnet’s Walter Robinson strolls the property of art collector Jerome Stern and discovers his fondness for art in the woods. One of the fabulous sculptures he finds on Stern’s 17-acre Quioque, NY estate is Huang Yong Ping’s Amerigo Vespucci — a life-sized aluminum Mastiff urinating a puddle in the shape of the United States. It’s one of several works celebrating the “primordial theme of relieving oneself.” Take a woodsy walk, visit Stern’s artbarn, and have your own primordial encounter with art and nature by appointment only.
