View my entire "Fawns" Pinterest board where there are more, lots more, photos of fawns.  I went a little deer crazy during my dog-less days.

Also, Dog Art Today reader Peter Halston sent me Retronaut's post about Wild Pets: 1891 – 1971, which is very intriguing and makes me glad I chose a wild pet called a puppy.

Hat tip to reader Gary Ellis for sending me the link.

Jewel Waldrip is a frequent commenter (thank you, Jewel), an artist, and the only Dog Art Today reader I know who owns a Xoloitzcuintli dog.  You may not be familiar with the name but you have seen the breed before in this photo on Frida Kahlo and her dogs:

The Aztecs considered Xolos sacred because they believed these dogs were needed by their masters’ souls to help them safely through the underworld. Today, they are the national dogs of Mexico.

Jewel is endlessly inspired by her Xolo, Evie.  Here are some of my favorite works:

  • Dennis Kucinich: Frida Kahlo’s Itzcuintli Dog and Me

In case you haven't been paying attention, Rep. Dennis Kucinich is married to a stunning 6 foot tall, pierced-tongued young Brit named Elizabeth.  Her mother is a healer.   She frequents thrift stores for her wardrobe needs.  She worked with mother Theresa in India.   And she's 31 years younger than Kucinich.

I think he is perfectly depicted as this Itzcuintli Dog, standing proudly in the shadow of another statuesque, worldly woman, Frida Kahlo.

    Kahlo22

This 3000-year-old Mexican breed is thought to have mystical healing qualities and accompany souls to the next world.  Kucinich mirrors such mysticism through his friendship with Shirley MacLaine and his belief in UFOs.  He may be small in stature, but he's never afraid to stand strong for his often unpopular beliefs like his anti-war stance right from the start.  He's also not afraid to believe in the cosmic possibility of finding one's soul mate and falling in love in an unlikely, magical way.  Read more about his policies at Kucinich for President.

    Itzcuintli Dog With Me, 1938

This month marks the 100th year since Frida Kahlo’s birth on July 6. Mexico city is honoring their native daughter by finally giving her the acclaim she deserves with the Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes’s show, Frida Kahlo 1907-2007 National Homage. The exhibition features 354 works, including 65 oil paintings, 45 drawings, 11 watercolors, and 5 etchings, 50 letters, and more than 100 personal photographs.

Self Portrait with Small Monkey, 1945

The last time her works were seen in this city, now gripped in the throes of Fridamania, was 1940 when she was part of a group Surrealist show. Later, she would vehemently deny she was a Surrealist, stating, “I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality.” — A reality that continues to enthrall fans (including dog art lovers) around the world and across centuries. Show runs until August 19.
