  • The Pooch Clutch by Colleen Rudolf

    Pooch_Clutch_by_Colleen_Rudolf_4

The Pooch Clutch by Colleen Rudolf available at Etsy

The Pooch Clutch by Philadelphia artist Colleen Rudolf is a locally-sourced, eco-conscious, handcrafted, animal-free, made-in-America dream accessory.  It is a work of art as evening bag that inspires on every level.

First, the drawings: each sketch is a shelter dog from the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.  Colleen volunteered at the PSPCA while she was a graduate student at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.   After photographing and writing bios for hundreds of dogs for Petfinder, she decided that if she sketched and then painted portraits of the dogs, she could honor them more fully and help facilitate long-term placement.   She hoped that if she saw them as valuable enough to paint, others might pay attention them.

After graduation in 2008, her interest in dogs and art evolved, and she began creating objects with her portraits.  She founded Portraits by Colleen and designed dishes, mugs, bags, and greeting cards using business practices that reflect her commitment to local and sustainable modes of operation.

Each Pooch Clutch is sewn by a Philadelphia seamstress.  The hardware comes from Dallas, Texas.  The fabric is manufactured at Spoonflower in Durham, North Carolina with an inkjet printing process that entails very little waste of fabric, ink, water or electricity, and uses eco-friendly, water-based pigment inks on natural fiber textiles with no additional chemicals.  The eye-catching satin fabric inside the Pooch Clutch come from local textile businesses on Philadelphia’s fabric row.

No animals are used in the manufacturing of the Pooch Clutch.  It is vegan and fabulous, a rare breed.

And Colleen donates 10% of all proceeds to Philadelphia’s Street Trails Animal Rescue, a small local shelter she chose because of their passionate volunteers and their commitment to education.

I don’t feature many “doggie” fashions on Dog Art Today.  I am not interested in promoting cheap products made by low-wage (slave) labor in foreign countries (calculate your slavery footprint at Made in a Free World). That is why I am delighted to share the Pooch Clutch with you.  It is a beautiful object from its conception to its execution.   If I can help in its promotion, it is my privilege.

  • Patti Haskins Offers Free Shipping for Plushies

    Patti_haskins_dog_art_1

You don’t have to be a plushie to get free shipping (what you do in your private life is your own business).  You just have to pick a plushie dog, cat, fish, or pig from Pattie Haskins’s etsy store and enter coupon code “dogart.”  Patti is a self-taught artist from Dallas who crochets these soft sculpture animals without using patterns.  I think that gives them each an individual character, just like every animal you ever met.   My favorite is the apple green and brown striped Dachshund.  His Doxie expression is just perfect.

Lately, I’ve been reading a lot about the fibershed movement, people attempting to clothe themselves using textiles sourced within 150 miles of their homes.  It would be interesting to combine the stuffed animal market with the fibershed folks and bring back the locally-sourced toy.  Just try finding a sock mokey that isn’t made in China.  Until then, visit Patti’s etsy store, website or blog for homegrown American plushies.

  • Pen + Ink Dog Portraits by Jo Chambers

    Jo_chambers_dog_portraits_1

Bath, UK artist Jo Chambers likes to tell stories with her work.   And when it comes to her custom dog portraits, with a good photo from the client and a brief description, she tells the story of your pet’s “personality” with simple lines and pen and ink.  Her whimsical drawings are so rich they are often mistaken for watercolor paintings.  It’s not too late to order a Jo Chambers original of your dog, but act now because Martha Stewart recently featured her in her gift guide (yay Jo! but so bummed I was scooped by Martha).

Visit Jo Chambers’s blog Studio Legohead to commission a portrait.  An 8.5 x 11″  pen and ink drawing is $140.   You can tell her what your dog would like to wear; hat, bow tie, tiara, or au naturale.

Jo also sells postcards and greeting cards of her pen and ink drawings at her etsy shop.  These would be great holiday cards or hostess gifts.  And stop by her blog to see what she’s up to.  Tell her Moira, not Martha sent you.

  • Kristin Loffer Theiss: Free-Motion Dog Drawings

    Kristin_loffer_theiss_1

Artist and mom, Kristin Loffer Theiss brings her modern sensibility and her MFA degree from The School of Visual Arts in NYC to the world of children.  The result; her klt:works blog, Etsy shop, and website which feature her works inspired by the unedited creativity children tempered by the eye of an artist trained in form, function, line, texture, and color.

I especially like Kristin's dog plush toys and t-shirts made from silkscreen prints of her free-motion thread drawings.  And, of course, her model, muse, and son, Sayer is a doll.

Thanks, Trish Holbrook Meyler for letting me know about klt:works

P.S. Kristin's blog is really a treasure of visual inspiration for any artist or beauty lover.  Highly recommend.

P.P.S.  Yes, the plush toys are for kids, but I think they would be fun for dogs too.  I know one little dog who would delight in tearing these works of art to shreds.

  • Sculpted Jewelry by Tory Herford

    Dog_jewelry_1

    Three Dogs Ring

Artist Tory Herford gives customers a word of warning on her Etsy site, "I consider myself a sculptor- not a jeweler. If you like dainty jewelry, you won't find it here!"  I like her definitiveness, and that her work really speaks for itself.  Bold, heavy pieces that meld whimsy with elegance are her specialty, along with inspiration from Asia and nature.

Her exquisite dog-themed jewelry is created from hand-casting old buttons with wax and heavy sterling silver, giving them a modern feel with a nod to traditional 19th century dog art.  Tory says she grew up obsessed with the Natural History Museum.  As a child, she would refuse to leave.  Today, although she still is fascinated with antiquities and treasures of ancient cultures, as an artist, she has figured out how to make her own natural wonders, wonders you can own.
