Mark your calendars to bid on this Dogs Rule Fat Book this Saturday, November 15th.  The project was a collaboration of 13 dog artists (myself included) who each contributed an original work of art.  Fabulous photographer and artist, Jill Beninato, who spearheaded the project, then bound the works together to create this one of a kind dog art book.  All proceeds benefit a Place to Bark Animal Rescue.

The link to the auction will be posted here on Novemeber 15.  Good luck!

  • Celebrate Dogs Rule Day This Saturday 10.11.08

    Dogs_rule_day

The Pedigree people have christened this Saturday, October 11 International Dogs Rule Day.  I know Dog Art Today readers celebrate their dogs every day with passion and creativity.  And I am in awe by the generous ways you support issues that impact the welfare of dogs, especially shelter dogs, but why not give our friends their own super, extra special day, too?

It's a great excuse to upload all those photos sitting in your camera.  Or download them and make that collage you've been meaning to make (that one is for me.)  Or sleep in late with extra belly rubs.   Or get up early for a long walk.  Let your dog decide, as if s/he doesn't already.

There are 101 ways to celebrate at DogsRuleDay.com.  Here are some of my favorites:

#29 Get a professional photo taken.  The best selection of dog photographers from all over the country is right here on Dog Art Today.  Find one in your area and make an appointment.

#41 Give up your favorite chair.

    # 45 Get a tattoo of your dog.  If you're in LA go to Onizuka Tattoo like my friend Allison did

#47 Get your dog a fire hydrant.  The Hydrant Dog Bed by For the Dogs would be perfect.

#54  Go a shelter and give the dogs some love and attention.  Check out the sweeties that Dog Art Today reader, Grace Chon of LA's  Shine Pet Photos, photographs for the rescue Paw'd Squad.  You might just come home with this little guy, Helio, an 8 week-old American Staffordshire Mix.   Or simply make a donation.

#74  Watch a dog movie marathon.  Or better yet, sneak your dog into Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

    And here is my tip…

#102 Save the date November 15 to bid on the Dogs Rule Fatbook, a labor of love created by 13 different dog artists from across the country (myself included).  All proceeds from the auction go to the animal rescue A Place to Bark.  Watch the sneak peek video:

And last but not least, stop by facebook and join the Dog Rule Day celebration by uploading photos + videos of your precious pup.

  • Dog Rule Fat Book Sneak Peek

Over the summer, thirteen dog artists, including myself, worked on this collaborative project called Dogs Rule.  On November 15th we are going to auction a copy of this handmade dog art book to benefit A Place to Bark Animal Rescue.  I will have more on this closer to the date, but I just had to share this terrific video that fellow artist Rebecca Collins put together featuring an interview with the project’s mastermind, Jill Beninato.

In Hollywood we would call it a teaser trailer. Enjoy!

    More details coming soon…

  • Dogs Rule and So Does Pedigree!

Pedigree has sponsored the Westminster Dog Show for 21 years. This year, they went a step further in their campaign to raise awareness of homeless dogs; they set up the Pedigree DogStore in Times Square to benefit the Pedigree Adoption Drive. For two weeks, the DogStore has been a place for dog lovers to stop in and spend time with, and hopefully adopt, animals from the no-kill animal shelter Animal Haven.

Pedigree also took a cue from Christo and Jeanne-Claude, creating a Central Park art installation of bright yellow dogs in the grey heart of February (above). Each dog has a quote such as “I wish I was home” — beautiful, poignant, clever marketing at its best.

Celebrities such as Kate Walsh who opened the store, and Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler More (founders of Broadway Barks) also add to the allure of the DogStore, as well as Dogs Rule apparel and merchandise. Also, computers are set up where visitors can upload their dogs’ photos into Pedigree’s “Million Dog Mosaic.” Pedigree donates a dollar to the Pedigree Adoption Drive for every photo added. You can upload your own dog’s photo here.

Kate Walsh launches Pedigree’s DogStore with the help of a friend from Animal Haven.

Yay, Pedigree for raising 3.5 million for your adoption drive since you began it in 2005. Yay, for the $10,000 you’re donating to Broadway Barks. And most of all, yay for changing the preconcieved notion that shelter dogs don’t make good pets.

A giant corporation can do more than just sell dog food. With creativity and vision, it can change lives by bringing dogs and owners together. As TBWA\Chiat\Day creative director Chris Adams, who created the campaign with partner Margaret Keene, remarked when he first visited the store, “I think this is the coolest thing we’ve ever done.” I agree, Chris and Margaret, very cool, indeed!
