Minneapolis artist, Kat Corrigan, is diving in the deep end this summer when it comes to her dog art.   First, there is her “Dog Show” exhibition that opens tomorrow night, June 30, at the Key North Boutique.  Then, on July 1, she commences 30 Dog in 30 Days, an ambitious project she describes as “a dedicated painting practice, where the commitment to painting every day positively (and sometimes profoundly) affects the quality of the overall work.”  Half-way through the painting marathon she will give an artist’s talk on July 14, once again at Key North Boutique.  Then, she will mount an exhibition of all 30 dog paintings on August 19 at Diamond’s Coffee Shop, where she is also creating a space where the actual dog muses can attend.

If you’re not in Minneapolis to see this dynamo in action, visit her blog,  My AUTOBI-DOG-RAPHY, where she will be posting her completed dog each day.  If you are in Minneapolis, stop by one of her events with banana, some Gatorade, and a foil blanket.  Go Kat!

The paintings in this post are from Corrigan’s 30 Dogs in 30 Days 2010.  See them all here.

    Sadie ignores the paparazzi

Sadie, the spectacular Scottie who entered the competition as the favorite having won over 100 best in show ribbons in her career, took home the top honors at the 134 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.  Looking for a good photo of her, I am once again reminded of the amazing skill of the pet photographers I feature here.  Daylife has a great collection of shots, many of which illustrate how difficult it is to truly capture the essence of dogs on film, especially black ones.  I chose this Reuters photo because I love the cool expression of this athlete who did exactly what she planned to do, dominate.  Congratulations, Sadie and handler Gabriel Rangel.

Hopefully you didn't miss last night's first round of judging at The 134 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.  Tonight they judge the Sporting, Working, and Terrier Groups, and select the Best in Show.   The show begins at 8pm ET on USA.   But it is shown time-delayed at 8pm to West Coast viewers.  Visit the WKC website for more information and highlights of last night's judging.

Boston.com has an excellent round up of behind the scenes photographs like the one above, and they continue to update images as the event unfolds.  Hat tip to my cousin Clair "Answer Girl" Lamb for sending me the link to these great shots.

P.S. Will a Dachshund ever win the Hound Group in my lifetime?!!!

  • Heather LaHaise: Dog Portrait Duality

    Lahaise_graffiti

    Graffiti

Heather LaHaise was born in N.Y. and grew up in Columbia, S.C.  After graduating from the University of South Carolina with a degree in art, she moved back to N.Y. and took classes at Pratt Manhattan.

I think this north/south,urban/rural cross-pollination comes through beautifully in her dog art.  Traditionally painted dogs drip down her canvases or are cleverly cropped into graphic designs.  I especially like her use of graffiti – as if she's still inspired (haunted?) by the gritty, dirty streets of Manhattan even as she embraces the gentility of South Carolina where she now makes her home.

This is a tricky duality to pull off, but Heather has figured it out.  Her paintings don't look gimmicky or divided by it.  In fact, I think the text unifies her works in a surprisingly remarkable way.  I just love them.

Why dogs?   Heather says, "Not only does their honesty make them perfect subjects, they lack pretension, and their only motive is to please.  They make our homes comfortable and even add a lovely distressed finish to furnishings."  Sweet.

If you're in Charlotte, N.C. you can see Heather LaHaise's dog paintings at the Green Rice Gallery's The Dog Show until August 31, 2008.

  • Adrianna Button at The Dog Show

    English Bull Dog

Charlotte, NC artist Adrianna Button’s works will be featured tomorrow night at Green Rice Gallery’s exhibition, The Dog Show.  Three of her magnificent oil painting will be on display alongside 11 other dog artists (including Brian Rubenacker whom I featured here back in May).

While Adrianna refers to her paintings as Contemporary, I am struck how much they remind me of late19th/early 20th century artist John Singer Sargent’s work…well, specifically one of his pieces.   Her brush strokes and energy capture the same essence I see in Sargent’s Pointy, one of my all time favorite dog paintings.

Adrianna studied painting as a girl alongside her artist father, and says,  “My undergraduate work painting and illustration was spent exploring figures in all types of mixed media, but my love of dogs has captured my creative spirit.”  Maybe it’s the spirit of love that ties Sargent and Button together.  Pointy was painted for a woman Sargent was enamored with and Button’s dogs glow with a women who’s found a subject she is enamored with.  Or maybe Button is simply a super-talented artist in the classic oil on canvas tradition and Sargent was way ahead of his time.

Regardless, I would love to see her paintings up close and really experience them.  If you’re in the Charlotte area, you get the chance to do so tomorrow night at Green Rice Gallery.   Sounds like a great night!
