  • 17th Century Greyhound Sculpture Aquired by the Rijksmuseum

    Bronze Greyhound by Artus Quellinus, 1609-1668

    Hat tip to Michèle of Brussels, writer of the wonderful Eurodog blog, who keeps me informed of the latest European dog art news.  When she sent me this post about this magnificent Greyhound bronze , I thought it was a contemporary piece.  In fact, this lifesize dog sculpture was created in the mid-17th century by Artus Qhellinus of Antwerp. 

    Note the dog's detailed collar.  On it, is the Roose family coat of arms, so it is thought that this is a dog portrait of the family's pet.  Once again we see there is nothing new in our obsession with our dogs and our desire to memorialize them through art.

    This is one of five sculptures recently acquired by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.  Visit their website for more information.

    In honor of the release of the new beautiful and comprehensive book, The Baroque World Of Fernando Botero by John Sillevis, David Elliott, and Edward J. Sullivan, I’ve curated a virtual exhibition of this renowned Colombian painter’s dog art works.

    Excerpt from Booklist review:

    “Sillevis aligns Botero’s baroque fullness of form with the magic realism of Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Studies in beauty and terror, Botero’s monumental figures can be sensual, and many are large with pain and sorrow. Like Goya, Botero often depicts violence, but no works attain the moral weight of his Abu Ghraib series.”

    The retrospective, The Baroque World Of Fernando Botero, runs from now until January 11, 2009 at The Brooks Museum of Art in Memphis.

  • Huang Yong Ping’s Amerigo Vespucci Dog Sculpture

    Artnet’s Walter Robinson strolls the property of art collector Jerome Stern and discovers his fondness for art in the woods. One of the fabulous sculptures he finds on Stern’s 17-acre Quioque, NY estate is Huang Yong Ping’s Amerigo Vespucci — a life-sized aluminum Mastiff urinating a puddle in the shape of the United States. It’s one of several works celebrating the “primordial theme of relieving oneself.” Take a woodsy walk, visit Stern’s artbarn, and have your own primordial encounter with art and nature by appointment only.
