DIY Dog House from Graypants
Seattle-based architects Johnathan Junker and Seth Grizzles of Graypants like to make all kinds of things (they also like to wear gray pants). They especially like re-purposing, as in this elegantly designed DIY dog house made from found objects.This one was auctioned off for the annual Bark in the Park benefit to help aid mistreated animals. But if you have some lumber and an extra road sign handy, you can make one for your eco-conscious dog. You have the whole weekend to tinker. Go for it!
Ingredients: old windows behind the garage / basement scraps of wood / leftover cedar siding / one generous souvenir left by the road crew

Andrew Armstrong: Canny Canine Design
Trunk Bunk & Tree’t BowlSculptor Andrew Armstrong has turned his attention to dogs. His latest designs, now on view at LA’s fith floor in Chinatown, include the eco friendly Trunk Bunk & Tree’t Bowl made from reclaimed wooden pallets and grocery bags, the Polynesian inspired Tiki Dog House, and my favorite the Shaggy Shank, a handmade dog rug in the shape of a steak.
I love seeing artists play with materials and words with such expertise. And how great is it that such lighthearted designs were created in the spirit of two very serious goals, spoiling our pups and saving our planet. Well done — get it — as in “How do you want your Shaggy Shank?”

Happy 4th of July!
Since I’m taking tomorrow off, I’m wishing you all a happy 4th of July today.
And because dogs and fireworks don’t go together, I’m featuring Sabrina Helas’s beautiful and haunting Dog House photo. I know it doesn’t have the “rah rah” patriotism of a splashy red, white, and blue image, but I am drawn to it in a John-Cougar-Mellencamp-Ain’t-That-America kind of way. And, of course, the neon Dachshund is awesome.
Sabrina is a super talented L.A. pet photographer whom I’ve featured here before. She has recently expanded into maternity photography and children under 6. See her dogs here and her mommies and kids here.
Also, here are some tips to calm dogs’ fears during fireworks.

More Dog Art Wine
Recently my mother sent me a link to a wonderful website called The Naked Vine where Mike from Kentucky blogs his “wine advice for the rest of us.” The link she sent was entitled “For Jesse” on the one-year passing of Mike’s Chocolate Lab (above).
Mike has several great dog art wines to share along with reviews and excellent ideas for food pairings. Check out his blog to learn more (and read some hilarious stories about Jessie devouring steaks off the counter and drinking a bottle of wine.) Here are the wines he features in her honor:
Dog House “Checker’s Cab” Cabernet Sauvignon.
Finnigan’s Lake “Fin” Chardonnay. (I included the Cabernet Sauvingnon label too since they looked nice together.)
McNab Ridge “Fred’s Red” Syrah/Zinfandel blend.
Mike also features Vinum Cellars’s “Pets” Petit Sirah which I posted last month.
Thinking about the popularity of dogs and wine, I’m going to steal a quote from Ovid atop The Naked Vine’s Home page: “When there is plenty of wine, sorrow and worry take wing.” The same can be said about dogs 🙂

Divine Danish Dog House
Yesterday I found this sleek Danish doghouse that doubles as an end table from Pet Project, available at idChicago. It’s perfect for clutter busters, neatniks, cave-dwelling dogs, and those who miss their hi-fi speakers from the 70s. I discovered this unique piece, called Eddie’s Room, on a newfound site, PupStyle, “the original snobby dog blog.” (I think I secretly thought mine was.) Stop in for some truly luxe finds.
