  • Project71 Dog Beds

Robin Arouty is one of the most passionate dog advocates I know.  She devotes endless hours to the Houston shelter, BARC, and now has created a program to help dogs on a national scale.  It's called Project71 and it's based on the finding that within the first 72 hours of an animal entering a shelter it will either:

    1) be united with their owner

    2) enter an adoption program

    3) be euthanized

…so the first 71 hours are their most crucial.  Robin designed these beds to comfort the dogs while volunteers like her work at reuniting or placing rescue dogs.  To contribute to this amazing project you can purchase a bed for your own pup and know that all the proceeds go to animal rescues.   Or you can buy one (or many) to be shipped to your favorite shelter.   The beds cost $45, very reasonable for their cool design and their waterproof , durable build.

I think it is a wonderful program that gives dog-lovers tangible means to comfort homeless dogs.  Something concrete to keep them off the concrete.

The beds are available at etsy and ebay.  Consider donating some beds to your favorite animal rescue as Christmas gifts this year.  Visit Robin's Project71 blog to learn more.

  • Pricipalities Dog Beds

    Principalities

The Principalities website reads like a fairy tale.

Hear ye!  Hear ye!  I have just discovered the most beautiful dog beds in all the land.  Inspired by the long body of his Dachshund, Edgar, furniture builder Dieter von Deichmann of Liechtenstein looked back to the reign of Napoleon I when the oval shape was all the rage and got to work creating the perfect bed for his little guy.  Now, through his company, Principalities, he builds exquisite hand-crafted dog beds that endow every pet with their own dreamy kingdom.  Here are some of my favorites.

  • Put a Rubber on Rover T-shirt

    Put_a_rubber_on_rover

Years of Bob Barker telling people at the end of "Price is Right" to spay and neuter their dogs didn't work.  PETA's campaign featuring Mickey Rourke challenging pet owners to "Have the cajones to fix your dog" isn't working.  So leave it to psychotherapist/graphic designer/dog lover Robyn Arouty of Project 71 to spell it out in black and aqua with humor and cool.  Great job, Robyn!

  • Scottie’s Fine Art Caves

    Dog_cave_
    Cannery Bay Cave

Ten years ago Richard Miklenic’s life changed forever when he adopted a Maltese/Yorkie puppy he named Scottie (above), and he fell madly in love with the spirited little dog.  One stormy night, he and Scottie were trapped with no electricity in a house on Vancouver Island as trees banged on the roof and the wind howled outside.  Richard tried to comfort Scottie, holding him near the wood stove.

But Scottie was terrified and ran into the darkened house, first behind a curtain and then into the closet in the master bedroom.  Scottie’s primal nature told him to find a cave, and he did the best he could.  The next morning, Richard decided that if Scottie needed a cave to feel secure he would have one, and Scottie’s Fine Art Caves was born.

Each one is hand-crafted using eco-friendly driftwood from Vancouver Island and reinforced paper mache stone.   And because every dog cave is a work of art, only 30 are made each year.   So get your order in now.

  • Jonathan Adler’s Happy Chic Boutique

    Jonathanadler

One of my favorite design blogs is sfgirlbybay. The editor Victoria always has something fabulous to share. Recently she and her dog Cooper stopped by Jonathan Adler’s Fillmore Street store and found it filled with fun, sophisticated finds and lots of dog love -– biscuits, dog beds, and gorgeous Greyhound sculptures as seen in the lower right image above. (Photo is borrowed from Victoria’s blog.)

  • Dog Beds Designed to Delight

My Dog Art Décor Section has been a little sparse, and the dog art pillows were a big hit. So today is devoted to dog beds a designer (or artist) would love. Look at beautiful items I found at cribcandy:

    The Round Shaker Pet Bed
I’m from Shaker Heights, so this struck a chord with me. So simple and so sweet. From Shaker Workshops.

    The Lucite Mija Bed
If Austin Powers had a dog, this would be his bed. The Mija comes in five colors, with six cushion color choices. Totally groovy! From WowBow of London.

    The Elly Bed
This is my favorite. It comes in wenge or zebrawood. Very Zen. From Bark Deco.
