  • She Can’t Believe She Said That! Opens This Weekend

My friend Matt Prager is one of those shockingly funny people who isn't afraid to go all the way with a joke.  Whether it's recording albums for bands that don't exist, or pitching TV executives with popsicle stick puppets, his absurd sense of humor is exceeded only by his intellect.

So I wasn't surprised to hear his musical about the "rise and fall and fall and rise of Kathie Lee Gifford nee Epstein, She Can't Believe She Said That!, was selected to be a part of this year's New York Musical Theater Festival.  But I was surprised to hear that a Long Haired Dachshund named Petula Sue plays a pivotal roll in the saga to KLG's life.

I don't want to give away the character arc of Petula Sue and her impact on a young(er) Kathie Lee, but I will let you know not to expect a little Darby scampering across the stage.  Matt chose to use a stuffed dog on a stick instead.  And I hear she is a real show-stopper.

    Darby

Darby's headshot.  He would like to play Petula Sue if the show comes west.

    From the PR:

"She Can't Believe She Said That! recounts the true story of talkshow hostess Kathie Lee Gifford over thirty years, creating an identity out of thin air to achieve national fame… and international infamy. The original Kathie Lee-sical, this loony satire from one of the writers of SOUTH PARK is like Evita crossed with cheese — Velvevita, if you will."

Also, my cousin, the fabulous Clair (Answer Girl) Lamb, is the stage manager.  So if you go, stop by and say hi to her and Matt and tell them I sent you.

If you are a blogger or member of the press and would like free tickets email me and I will hook you up.

Show runs until October 5, 2008 at
    TGB (The Barrow Group Theater)
    312 West 36th St., 3rd Floor
    New York, NY 10018

  • Yay Me: Moira McLaughlin Receives Thinking Blogger Award!

    Moira_award_blog

We interrupt this regularly scheduled dog art blog to announce that the fabulous Melissa Langer of PugNotes has tagged me with the Thinking Blogger Award. Melissa states ” I always learn something new about art and the world when I visit Moira’s wonderful blog.”

    Thinking_blogger_post

Thank you so much Melissa. That means a lot coming from truly one of the most creative and inquisitive minds I’ve encountered in the blogosphere. Really, if it’s crafty, Melissa has done it or is about to take a course next week. She blows my mind!

Here are the rules attached to these awards:

    1. You must write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think.

    2. Acknowledge the post of the award giver.

    3. Optional: Proudly display the ‘Thinking Blogger Award” with a link to the post that you wrote.

    4. Tell the award winners that they won by commenting on their blogs with the news.

The Five Blogs That Make Me Think:

    1. Answer Girl – makes me think I will never read as many books as my cousin Clair Lamb has already re-read. And it makes me think, I will never be without a good book, since Clair’s recommendations are always 100% excellent!

    2. Wendy Brandes Jewelry – makes me think blogs are better when you truly express all facets of yourself. Jewelry, fashion, Medieval Queens, dogs, party pics, SEO strategies, and curious obsessions with fish feet, butt bows, and CoCo, Ice-T’s wife all co-exist seamlessly in Wendy’s world. If you stop by her blog be prepared to become one of her peeps. Her writing is completely addictive. (Wendy is excused from having to tag 5 more bloggers because she is continually being tagged and I know she’s already won the Thinking Blogger’s Award, probably more than once.)

    3. Post Secret – reminds me how complex, clever, and creative people are. Each post card could inspire a great short story, novel, indie film, psychoanalytical dissertation or air tight restraining order.

    4. Ping Mag – Makes me think I have Japanese DNA in my system. I can lose myself there for hours. Everything is beautiful at Ping!

    5. FFFFound! – Agggh! I think I’ve been meaning to join this brilliant site for months. Description: “FFFFOUND! is a web service that not only allows the users to post and share their favorite images found on the web, but also dynamically recommends each user’s tastes and interests for an inspirational image-bookmarking experience!!”You must visit it to get the full experience. Truly genius!

(Above Photo: Me the night I won the Father Gallegar Athlete-Scholar Award in eighth grade, 1981. Yeah, I still like to brag about it.)

  • Happy Birthday Darby! And Clair too!

    Darby_fireplace_blog

Darby turns 13 today. And after his recent kidney removal surgery seems better than ever. Here are 13 reasons why I think he is the best dog in the world:

    1. he doesn’t smell — or if he does I like the way he smells
    2. the ways he charges with enthusiasm when I tell him to go from one room to the next, as if I’ve had the best idea he’s ever heard in his life
    3. he likes to sleep in
    4. his doughy belly
    5. he doesn’t judge my doughy belly
    6. the way he lops like a hare when he runs
    7. his bravery at the vet
    8. he takes time to smell the lavender on our walks each day
    9. the way he makes a little jump into my arms when I bend down to pick him up
    10. he’s great with kids
    11. he can sit when he feels like it
    12. his smile (see picture below — he really does smile)
    13. he’s given me my art, my company, my blogger friends, and the realization that life is magically surprising if you let it be

Happy birthday Darby! I’m so lucky that you’re mine.

And happy birthday to my cousin Clair! I hope you have a great day.
