  • Dachshund’s First Christmas

    Dachshund_christmas_6_post

My parents gave me this beautiful hand carved nativity scene for my First Communion. I think it’s from Mexico. Years later they sent me the Dachshund ornament that I noticed fit right in with it!

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday season!

  • More Dog Art Christmas Cards

I confess I prefer inclusive cards for the holidays, the "Season's Greetings" and "Peace on Earth." Not everyone is all about Christmas. But Christmas cards actually make up 80% of the card sales. (I do my research) So, I'll include them too ; )
These are some of my favorites from other artists.

  • Whippet Good Ringer T-shirt. I Said Whippet…Whippet Good!

    Whippet_good

Yesterday’s Whippet poster reminded me of this Whippet Good T-shirt from One Horse Shy I’ve been meaning to feature. It combines everything I love: dogs, the 80s, cool red, black and white design, and humor. Wish I knew a Whippet owner. I could cross them off my Christmas gift list today.

  • The Nature of Dogs by Mary Ludington

    Nature_of_dogs

Kassi, The Doxie With Moxie, dropped Darby a note to let him know Mary Ludington's new book The Nature of Dogs comes out today. Ludington, who has been photographing dogs for over 10 years, has a unique approach towards her subjects; she aims to "make them more distant from us in order to reveal something new about them."

    Nature_dog_1

I never thought about our closeness to dogs blinding us to their true nature, and I admire Ludington's attempts to "bypass the sentimental layer" we impose on them. But judging from her photos, I think she's set herself an impossible task. Her images are so wonderful we simply fall in love with the dogs, hence blinding us to their true nature.   I guess that's the paradox of dogs and love and dog-love.

Anyway, the book looks gorgeous and right in time for Christmas. It would make a great hostess gift for a dog-lover too.

  • Alec Soth: Dog Days, Bogota

    Alec_soth_dog_days_bogota

In 2002 photographer Alec Soth and his wife traveled to Bogota, Columbia to adopt a baby girl. While the paperwork was being processed Alec photographed the city in hopes of capturing the “hard beauty” of his daughter’s birthplace as a keepsake for her.

On October 1, Dog Days, Bogota, the book that came from Soth’s touching intention, and includes many wonderful non-dog images, is available for all photography lovers. Pre-order yours today and cross someone off your Christmas list.
