    A Perfect Friend

    Artist Matthew Rose writes from Paris that he is offering this artist proof of A Perfect Friend to one lucky collector for 250 Euros ($342.25).  The artist proof is the first try of the limited edition series that sell for $750 each.   It is signed, dated ,and marked with A/P instead of a series' number.   Size 56 x 76 cm  (22' x 30").

    Of the thousands of pieces of dog art I feature on my site, A Perfect Friend, might actually be my favorite.  Even as I write this, I can't fully explain why.  I just know that if I do mental bracket elimination in my head, I am pretty sure it would win.  (Note to self, look into online bracket widget for 2009). 

    If I had to name the elements I respond to in this piece, the list would go something like this: it's black and white, graphic, humorous, dada-esque, somehow poignant,  and minimal.  It combines everything I love: dogs, art history, contemporary art, 20th century art, 17th century art, and collage.  Basically it's a visual summation of what I write about every day.  Perfect!

    Regular readers of Dog Art Today know the maximum number of images I post for an artist is four.   And I’ve only done that twice. With two or three images you get the sense of the artwork, and a link to the artist’s website rounds out the info I usually provide.


    But today is different.  Today I’m featuring Paris–based, New York-born artist, Matthew Rose, and my blog seems too small to contain his collages.  His site is a veritable treasure trove of brilliant Dada-esque, surreal style, and thoroughly original work.  Clicking through it you see why his shows are wall-to-wall installations, why magnifying glasses and binoculars are provided for them, and why one galley set up a quiet room with soft lights and pillows in which visitors could recuperate after viewing the show.


    I can’t offer that, but I’ve edited out a few of my dog-themed favorites to ease you in to the Matthew Rose experience…after that you’re on your own.   Enjoy.
