PAWS For Charity Art Book

Paws_for_charity

L.A. Photographer Sabrina Helas dropped me a note to let me know a very cool dog art book that she contributed to is now available.  She was one of 37 dog artists who submitted their work to make the PAWS for Charity Art Book.  The project was spearheaded by Sara Harley and proceeds go to the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade

Visit the PAWS for Charity blog for more.

Sabrina also has links to all the artists at her website.  Awesome!

Thanks so much for posting about our 2009 Art Book Project! I was thrilled to have Sabrina involved in this project to raise funds for my favorite cause…breast cancer charity.

I was a bit confused- we have a “PAWS” organization in Seattle area that is a dog rescue shelter (Progressive Animal Welfare Society) and i contribute to it nearly every year. Not sure why dogs are the vehicle for breast cancer fundraising instead of for dogs…
and I NEVER contribute to any cancer research or walk-a-thons or pink ribbon events, as I believe the awareness is going totally in the wrong direction. These kind of fundraisers end up supporting pharmaceutical and surgical remedies rather than raising awareness of the causes of cancer (toxins, a contaminated environment, diet).
Maybe I’m wrong about this particular fundraiser???

I’d like to respond to some questions that Nancy has raised in her comment. I am the editor of the 2009 Paws For Charity Art Book, and one of the founders of the Paws For Charity group. The group was organized in 2006 in Ottawa, Canada and was originally a group of 4 female entrepreneurs who ran dog businesses.
Our Paws For Charity group raises funds for several causes…for people causes and dog causes as well. More information is available on our blog: http://www.pawsforcharity.blogspot.com .
I want to make it clear that we’re not a registered charity, we’re just a group of people trying to raise money for various causes.
Breast cancer causes are a personal thing for me. My mother died of breast cancer when I was 21. As the Editor of this book, I made the decision to raise funds for the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade. (www.avoncrusade.com)
The causes that we individuals choose to donate to are a personal thing. There is no right or wrong, it’s just a choice.

Beautifully put Sara and it’s an honor being part of such a project!
I do what I can for many causes ESPECIALLY canine causes. In my humble (non medical opinion) cancer is cancer whether it be canine or human, you find one cure and you are closer to the rest. As some of you know I lost my beautiful puppy love to cancer a few months ago and it was/is devastating. He ate organic food, we have a toxic free home, he was not over vaccinated, we have a holistic and western vet and my love still fell ill with cancer and died. There is no cure to cancer. We do need to raise awareness about the toxins in our environment and we also need surgical remedies until we have solved the environmental disaster at hand.. In my opinion we have room and should encourage all means of help and awareness.

Thanks much for putting up this post, it is truly a worthy cause. I was honored to be one of the artists selected for the book as it gave me an opportunity to use my work for helping other people in some way, shape or form.
Ironically there is a deeper story to my particular work that was selected. My selected piece is a photograph of our kitten “Iki”. Iki was discovered in our backyard in June of 2008 by my son Kyle who is autistic and has a special and strong love of animals. Iki was merely a day old when Kyle found him, and pretty much hours away from death. Apparently Iki’s mom had removed him from her litter and left him to die. We took him in and nursed him against the veterinarians prediction of a 50/50 chance of survival. He is now a 10 month old kitten in excellent health and spirit. In the selected photo, Iki is two weeks old and very scrawny. His good looks and charm comes across in the photo and has given both him, myself and Kyle the chance to help save another life.
The book is full with incredible art and loving animals and their owners. Thanks to Sarah for her devotion and hard work in putting this together and many thanks to “Dog Art Today” for helping to get the word out and make it possible to help a tremendous cause.

Sara took an already good idea – to use art to raise money for breast cancer research – and added an unexpected twist of making the art about pets. I love the idea and am so honored to have been selected to participate!
Thank you for profiling this project on your blog.
