Victor Jacquemont Holding a Parasol by Claude Monet, 1865

I went to the Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity exhibit in August, now late of the Met and the Chicago Art Institute, and dogs abounded in domestic and public scenes, almost always in shades of black and white. My favorite was James Tissot’s The Circle of the Rue Royale. Tissot placed this black and white dog front and center in the nearly 6X10 foot portrait of 12 upper class Frenchmen, wearing similar colors. Does the dog belong to the club or an individual? Hard to know, but the French clearly valued their pets! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tissot_cercle.jpg
BTW, the color of the light in this Monet painting is sooo gorgeous. Thank you for the post.
The French also let their dogs into restaurants!
